To be fair to the confused companions, Bhaal doesnt really give a shit who you kill as long as you... well... kill.

Going to the ancient, magic door to the Temple of Bhaal, and telling it that you're worthy 'cause you killed the murder tribunal actually made me laugh. Something about confessing to a Bhaal temple guardian that you killed other devotees only for it to go "yeah, that works lmao murder is murder, come on in" is just hilarious!
