There is an innate need to be selfish. You can most definitely and should be selfless, but not to the detriment of your own person, of your own life. IT IS OKAY TO BE SELFISH SOMETIMES. The people who think you should be selfless are being selfish, but want to put it on you. That has been my experience, at least.

If you don’t value yourself nobody else will. So having a bit of conceit is ok. Heck other people will trust you if say for example you are the pilot and you say you’re the top pilot.
