God, this is so real. I read Moby Dick on a whim when I was younger because it was a “classic, ” and I was shocked at the absolute roller coaster of emotional turmoil, whale facts, and gay romance that it actually was. Reading all of that in a “real book” meant so much to me as a young queer kid - it still has a very special place in my heart today. I own a nice hardcover copy that I still reread from time to time 🐋❤

Every time I tried to read the book I grew so bored by all the tangents that my brain completely tuned out everything I was reading to the point that I finished the entire book without knowing anything about what happened after the first chapter.
I had to spark notes it in order to understand the end of the story.

You can actually make a case for whales being fish by the rules of phylogeny. Basically, there are some fish (lungfish, coelocanths) that are more closely related to us than they are to more "typical" fish. Additionally, bony fish are closer to us than they are to sharks. And it's not possible to evolve out of a clade, clades must include a species and ALL of its descendants. So, scientifically speaking, either everything with a backbone is a fish, or nothing is.
