As a lawyer who has made various FOI applications, i can personally confirm its quite often a waste of time. They bugger you about, ask you lots of dumb questions, which basically boil down to ‘do you really want this stuff? Really? Why? Dont you think this is a bit pointless?’, then they tell you they dont have the resources, then when you actually get the documents, theyre mostly the irrelevant ones and the ones you really want and they gave you are redacted to buggery or withheld for various dumb reasons that take you a frustrating year or more to successfully challenge. Rinse and repeat, although quite often by then the client has given up or it no longer matters.

The problem with the FOI is that it would expose our country as being more corrupt than a lot of third world countries, and that's a bad look. It's the appearance of things that takes priority over the truth, nature, and the well being of the citizens.

You nailed it. I’ve been through the FOI process several times … once, I spoke to the supervisor of the area, and he actually told me over the phone that he denies all requests in the first instance AS A MATTER OF PRACTICE (ie irrespective of the content or merit of the request) … Fabulous …

Having worked in government the whole FOI process is broken. Unless you know specifically what you want or who has access to the information you'll get stonewalled by the FOI officers and departmental lawyers.

Indian here, and I love this channel. At this point, I believe that the world's dictators hold a roundtable conference to pass similar laws. The RTI (Right to Information) is quashed in India, followed by the latest Broadcasting Bill that treats content creators as OTT platforms. Comes after they saw the impact of political commentators who spoke against the government.

The UK has a freedom of information act, someone asked how many MP's had a criminal record it was 43%, a few years later someone asked the same question the response was, we no longer record that information.
