Edward Emily Gibbon (May 8, 1737 - January 16, 1794) was a British historian, considered to be the first modern historian, and one of the most influential historians of all time.

His magna work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published between 1776 and 1788, is a fundamental work whose influence lasts until today, not only to understand the historiographical evolution on this topic — not the state of the art, since the work is logically out of date — but also as a solid methodological landmark in the historical study.
