Success has no short cuts but Success is the monopoly of Lucky and Privileged people - UPSC Prelims 2023

Hi Shivin! It was my 2nd attempt this time post 2021. Prepared with all heart and soul and gave my best but I don’t think I’ll make it to mains. I’m 28, a working professional and married as well. Honestly, I don’t think I have the strength to prepare further.
So before leaving, I want to thank you for everything you did. For someone your age, you are exceptional at teaching with lucidity. Took both Environment and S&T from you. I had lots of fun and a great learning experience.
Before starting with the exam, I thought of all teachers who helped me along the way. You played a very important role. Please don’t feel that you should take up blame for how anyone performed. Multiple factors are involved. Between preparing for your interview and awaiting results, you made understanding the impossible(envt and S&T) possible for so many, like myself.

And to everyone else who might fail, this exam is not a reflection on you. You are much more capable than what you might think. Be thankful, take all the knowledge and persistence you gained here and use it to make magic. Stay strong, keep hustling!

Thanks again Shivin! For all your hard work, blood and sweat.
I’ll forever remember and respect you for your own person.

1. Luck play significant role in UPSC
2. UPSC could again change its pattern in 2024 ( unpredictable )
3. Start thinking about plan B

My Roommate

GS1 - 116
CSAT - 61

It was his 4th attempt, he studied like hell for the last 1 year and now when I see his face. I don't have words to make him feel good.

I myself calculated his marks

You are saying 100% truth. Coaching and ghatiya mentors have started to glorify this paper again, more hardwork, more efforts, ek zindagi upsc ke naam.... upsc wants scientists or common aware citizens. Like seriously???? I cried all day from 2 days. My first mistake was taking ba and second would be not taking MA. So I'm no running blindly behind this gambling now, I've taken double ma in Pol sci and theory and diploma in constitution and IR.i must secure my second front first. ADVICE ME SHIVIN IF IM DOING ANYTHING WRONG

Your honesty is praiseworthy. Otherwise post selection, selected candidates refrain to speak despite knowing truth.

There’s a fine difference between tough and absurdity. Asking questions on which animal uses stick to catch prey is totally an absurd question

In the world of upsc chaos you feels like home ❤

The environment at my home has grown very very hostile over the last two days. I cannot even vent or explain to my parents what I am feeling right now. I have not had the chance to process the events of 28th may. Mind you, I cleared last year's prelims with a comfortable margin and marginally missed the interview cutoff. This year the story has flipped and I am out in both the papers.

My mother is convinced from the toppers stories that "karte raho toh ho jaega", we are financially secure, you should keep trying for 4th attempt, but in situations like this when you know hard work is not the key, how can I put my most energetic lucrative years into a gamble. I know a lot of people who reached till interview and are not clearing this prelims, and I equally know people who are clearing it with fluke, without having solved a single mock.

I just wish for some relief, and some time off. I feel very very numb and clueless.

As if the paper wasn't already difficult, you cannot imagine the frustration, helplessness and disgust I feel for myself when I realised later that I chose the wrong option instead of the right one despite eliminating and staring at a 50-50 situation. In that God forsaken moment, when I was so close to the right option, I went with the wrong one. Don't think one can ever recover from this guilt.

Sir I'm an engineer. University gold medalist. Scored 100-120 in previous year papers. Still, prepared many topics. I failed csat.

Only thing that I hv understood from the paper is that we should be serious with prelims preparation.. our days of hardwork, mock tests, etc doesn't hv any role in deciding ur marks in upsc prelims. I was very studious these two years. Haven't given time for my family or friends, haven't attended my family functions, never taken a complete day off, never skipped a test, never allowed myself to have fun without guilt.. all these are not worth for clearing this paper. Now I feel I should give time for all my personal choices. Doing something that makes me happy. Cherish yourself

Very rightly said, This year's paper was not even a benchmark to judge one's preparation, it was literally like we were preparing our axe and they asked us to swim, the massive role of luck, is really a setback to hardworking aspirants.
Paper was just revolving around bizarre facts. I don't know what actually they want to check or prove?

How genuine a person can be he literally understand the pain of a serious aspirant nd his words are soothing for the heart nd gave us a mental piece. Shivin sir u r a rock star showing reality is much much tough then pretending us by keeping us blindfolded. Respect for sivin sir increased 1000 times 🙏

The problem was not the kind of questions which were asked. They were on the more or less expected lines. The main problem that made this tough was the way options were framed. We knew many questions where we could have eliminated statements had it been like previous papers. Don't know what's the rational behind such a paper. What upsc wants to prove ? Okay u are choosing the future officers but this is not how the exam is supposed to be. I know people who have worked literally hard are completely hopeless now. And the ones who relatively studied less are scoring around 80's just because their tukka got correct. It was 80 % luck and 20 % skill based.

Because of the growing competition in UPSC since last few years...UPSC has started to eliminate that competition, so that lesser people would think about opting for civil services.Days are gone when you just needed to cover the syllabus as much as possible... syllabus is just 50% of what UPSC is asking now

Its misconceptions that Engineering have advantage!! We dont study this kind of maths in engineering we study applied mathematics! Its all about integration and differentiation! Just permutations and combinations we study that too in our first year ! So No Engineer have that much benefit! Infact engineers ke liye upsc is more inclined to cut them out !

The Antigen did his best, and we did get significant amount of immunity bcoz of it. It's not your fault that the Pathogen Mutated.
Your course was the best decision in this whole attempt. Thanx a lot for your immense help.
