Locke's Letter Concerning Toleration

A broad overview of John Locke’s ethics. His argument for separation of church and state. What separation of church and state means. And what’s the deal with censoring atheists?!?

In this video I don’t cover this last question very systematically, but I do suggest three possibilities—that Locke is lying about something, that he is confused (perhaps influenced by his religious culture), or that he is just elaborating on his own ideas.

The third possibility is an opportunity to clarity that separation of church and state in Locke does not mean no religious principle is allowed to influence political theory.

(I don't want to censor atheists, but Locke's views might just make more sense they initially appear!)

I loved the video. You have the great ability of simplifying long and tedious text. Besides the fact that you explain both sides giving an unbiased account of the fact. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍

Censoring people is best when they can't afford things.

If there is a god he must be anglican. The anglican church plays excellent music year round and probably I'm just fondly remembering chapel at public school in britain. Certain music told us we'd be going home for holidays. I'm an anglican atheist who has been absolved by henry the 8th. I'm going to deny I heard he asked for a catholic priest on his deathbed.
