Subsidies to buy ebikes are actually worth the money, according to a new study #ebike #cycling

As more jurisdictions offer subsidies to people to buy ebikes, some people wonder if the investments actually make a difference. It’s a valid question. Money for initiatives like this often come from climate change funding, and we can’t afford to waste it. That’s why a new study out of Canada took a look at the impact of ebike subsidies on car use and greenhouse gas emissions.

A huge thanks to my sponsors this year. They support this channel, so please support them. They also make amazing products that I use every day and endorse without hesitation.

I don’t really do proper product reviews, but here are some products that I’ve tried on this channel that I like. (Of course, you don’t need anything fancy to ride a bike, other than a bike, but these are Amazon affiliate links, and I get paid a small commission if you buy them 😉)

My only issue with rebates is why only subsidies on ebikes and not on pedal bikes?

and health insurers (in the US), take note!
my health has vastly improved because I ride a bike more often.

eBikes are the future, not EV cars ☺️

I'd prefer they invest money in better infrastructure to be honest. My city offers subsidies for E-Bikes but there is no safe route for me to cycle to the train station, in a European town of 13'000 inhabitants. I do have train service every 15 minutes though, which is extremely nice.

So just because cycling is better than driving in every way that matters to a city, it should invest money into it? That's a tough sell!

This is happening in DC, and seems to be doing well since they’re launching the same program across the river in Arlington

New Jersey now classifies them as motorcycles, thus requiring registration, special licensing, and insurance. NJ chose the scheme to make money, rather than to boost ridership over cars.

I thought these subsidies would be great for Australia, my state capital just did one up to I think ten or twenty percent kickback, so it could be better. But the subsidies won't do anything to install better and safer infrastructure, and our motorists are basically bigoted against cyclists.

If FL is an ebike heaven and the roads are design for it. I would ditch my car, save myself about 6k a year, and take a nice long vacation.

Better off investing in infrastructure for all.

Otherwise the price just goes up on e-bikes.

And why shouldn’t a regular bike/skateboard/rollerblades be subsidised under the same premise as an eBike?

Not holding my breath for Calgary or Alberta to do this.

Hope they also provide (e)bike lessons, since these are new riders could be helping to get the casualties down

I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say thank you for making meaningful content. I'm really enjoying learning about bike commuting, which I've been struggling to do consistently for over a decade here in Missouri.

Minneapolis has one up to 1400 but I can't afford a bike that expensive. I'm poor.

Suprising, Laval in QC found it was insignificant. Maybe the city's infrastructure matter a lot

I would getting a brand new electric Gazelle if I had a subsidy.

My concern is that the price tag goes up by the amount of the rebate. I compared the price of a bike in Calgary vs the price in Vancouver, who offered a rebate, and it was higher in Vancouver. Since I commute, I can tell you that we compare all the time, some things are cheaper in BC than in Calgary (apples to apples of course) .
When the WTI hits $80, do retail gas drop the price by 4 cents? No, they do not.
