Shapiro or Walz? Analyst weighs in on Kamala Harris’ potential VP picks

Democrat Kamala Harris is expected to announce her vice-presidential pick on Tuesday (Aug 6) as she scrambles to introduce herself to the American public with a tour of battleground states just three months ahead of the United States presidential election. Frontrunners include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. John Aughenbaugh, associate professor of political science at the Virginia Commonwealth University, tells CNA’s Asia First Shapiro could help her convince moderate voters while Walz could help pull progressive voters.

It was a good choice. Well respected, elected to congress 6 times, governor twice. Lots of positivity and enthusiasm in the Harris /Walz camp. In contrast, the Trump/Vance camp seems to be focused on extreme hyperbole attacks and grievances. It’s very negative. It’s exhausting, and it’s gotten old.

VP is largely ceremonial. The VPs job is to support the President and agree with everything they say. They don't really have any power, unless the President is not able to serve. Harris picked Walz. If they lose Pennsylvania and that loses the election she will regret not picking Shapiro. 19 electoral votes could be the difference.

The featured guest missed an opportunity to make a key point—progressives will vote for Harris come what may—not so with regard to independents, moderates and disaffected Republicans—Shapiro is the superior choice for a national ticket not only for ‘balance’ but for his political acumen and educational/ professional gravitas. In these respects he stands head and shoulders above the Minnesota governor.
