This story is actually based on a story about a woman who went to confession. The woman confessed to the priest that she had been gossiping, then proceeded to say that it wasn't that big of a deal. As her penance, the priest told her to go to the market and buy a chicken, then walk through town and pluck every single one of the chickens' feathers and come back to confession the next day. The woman left and did as the priest said. The next day, in confession, the woman told the priest she had done what he said, and the priest said, "Good, now go pick up every single feather." The woman replied, "That's impossible. I can't do that." And the priest said, "That's exactly the same with the gossiping you did. You can never take it back. Even if you pick up a few feathers. It's too late."

My teachers did a similar thing when we were in year 5. There was a rumour spread about a kid (I didn't hear it so I don't know it) and although they didn't say who the rumour was about they made it pretty obvious. I can't remember if they actually did this next part or just used it as an example but, they released a pillow full of feathers in the area outside the classroom (not in the hallway) and asked us to find and collect every feather. We said it was impossible and they said that that was like a rumour, you'll never fully be able to take back the words you say. My memory is a bit hazy but that's the jist of it.
