There are many benefits to not prefilling an oil filter and it is actually recommended by CAT. A lot of oil filters are sideways or even upside down so prefilling is obviously impossible and therefore 100% unnecessary. Please go to Adept Ape and look up 'To fill or not to fill.' He's my go to CAT guy. He can explain the reasoning behind not prefilling the filter way better than me and I'm tired of defending myself tbh.

I’m no mechanic myself but happen to be friends with one who’s been pulling wrenches nearly 50 years and he agrees that you never have to pre fill filters. He never has on any equipment he’s ever worked on and never had issues because of that.

Tip about checking for the old seal is underrated. Always check your fuel and oil filter seals

I was a diesel mechanic for awhile in the Marine Corps. Love Lucas anything. Their products are amazing.

Love the Lucas. I use it every oil change on my 96 F-150 302. Over 3 hundred thousand miles on it, no smoke and good power and great oil pressure .

CAT strongly discourages prefilling any filter. Cummins reccomends you do. Two schools of thought, yes oil from a jug or drum is not filtered yet, your oil pump can handle the contamination, and the filter fills up in about 5 seconds and oil pressure returns as normal. On the other hand what do you use to lube bearings when you build an engine? Oil or assembly lube, these aren't necessarily filtered either 🤷🏼‍♂️

Lucas is an oil thickener, that's it. It has no zinc or additives so it dilutes the additives in the oil. If you buy thicker oil it would do the same thing and make the engine last longer.

For old equipment and you can keep the oil hot, Lucas is Great!! Keeps the old equipment running

I know CAT says you don't need to, but I still pre-fill on my 3406e, I also don't use Lucas, but Marvel Mystery, it really does make a difference.

I enjoy seeing privateers wrenching on their own rigs. I do not currently have a rig. Although I have a one ton dual wheel pickup and it holds 3 gallons of oil.
And I love Lucas products!

Lucas stabilizer is just pure thickener. You would be better off using one grade thicker oil or using the lucas mid change interval to extend the life of the oil, since the viscosity modifiers are the first things that breakdown.

My teacher has always said about automobile not diesel that we do not pre fill the filter because it may look clean but it could have small comtaminants and before we start we fill it to the full line and run the vehicle for about a minute to level off the oil inside let it rest and then check the oil. Comes out perfect everytime

When I was a diesel mechanic on the ISX cummins, we never filled the oil filter. We never had any issues. People talking about starving the engine of oil, but everything is already oiled, and it only takes a few seconds to fill the oil system.

When I used to do the PM services, I would drop 2 oil plugs on a Caterpillar engine. The back one and then there's one in the front reinstall plugs fill up the filter, fill oil and if the driver wanted Lucas I would have the Lucas sitting on top of the motor to get warm.

Thank you for pointing out HAND TIGHT when putting filters on. Let one of these steering wheel holders try taking a oil or fuel filter off that’s been put on with a band filter wrench

Helpful tip... If you have one of those heavy duty magnetic grabbers that extends like an old radio antenna, they work great for spinning the drain plug out that last little bit and keeping your hands clean. It's good for more than just holding notes on the side of your cart.
