Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles unveils the completely redesigned Transporter and Caravelle for its world premiere at IAA Transportation 2024.

The nine-seater Caravelle was designed for commercial passenger transport – a shuttle and minibus par excellence.

Diesel, hybrid and electric drive: seven efficient drive versions will be available upon market launch. For the first time, this range includes three turbocharged diesel engines (TDI), a plug-in hybrid drive (eHybrid) and three electric drives (e-Transporter and e-Caravelle). The TDI engines deliver 81 kW (110 PS), 110 kW (150 PS) and 125 kW (170 PS). The 125 kW TDI is always combined with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is optionally available for the 110 kW TDI as an alternative to the 6-speed manual gearbox. The TDI models from 110 kW can be ordered with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A system power of 171 kW (232 PS) characterises the plug-in hybrid drive combined with an automatic gearbox (eHybrid). The e-Transporter and e-Caravelle launch with 100 kW (136 PS), 160 kW (218 PS) and 210 kW (286 PS). The capacity of their battery is 64 kWh (net).

Very nice interior and I really like the glass roof. But not so sure about the exterior design. Why is the VW badge on the front so small ? Looks lost. I would love to see a large modern round version of the VW badge like on the T2 and improve the rear lights so it does not look too much like a Ford Transit.

It’s such a pity that VW has decided to let Ford do all the work such as designing and producing the new transporter. The VW managers talk about their Icon, but how is it possible that you treat one of your icons like this! Could you imagine that VW decided tot hand over the design and production of the Golf to one of their competitors? No VW, you have gambled that your clients would believe that your new Transporter is a real VW, but it’s just a Ford Transit with a different front end and steering wheel! As a very loyal VW customer I feel that you let me and for sure a lot of other VW customers (adepts), down. I have driven all the T7 predecessors but for sure I am not buying this Ford Transit clone! Thanks (not!) VW for squandering your iconic Transporter and alienating your loyal customers!😢

Maybe there's relatively little money for VW in the T5 T6 scene, and all the real money comes from selling new to tradesmen and delivery companies etc. I get that VW have spent all their money developing the ID Buzz and the questionably targeted Multivan, but I cant help feeling this leftover 'VW Transit' is a compromise too far for the T5/ T6 aficionados. It's not true lineage.. and I just cant see it becoming a cult vehicle. If it's that similar, you may as well have the more honest Ford Transit..
