Brood Nineteen cicadas emerge, massive cicada invasion hits Central Virginia

The hum of cicadas is a familiar summer soundtrack in Virginia, but this year promises an extra buzz with the arrival of Brood Nineteen, the largest of all periodical cicadas.

Emerging once every 13 years, this natural phenomenon, known as the Great Southern Brood, is currently swarming Central Virginia alongside annual cicadas.
