Tate was three inches taller and 24½ lbs heavier than Weaver.
Tate was a 2-1 favorite.
There was a crowd of 12.769.
Unofficial AP scorecard (through 14 rounds) - 137-132 Tate.
Weaver said he knew he was behind and needed a knockout to win.
"Finally in the fifteenth round, my manager reminded me I was telling everyone I knew that I was going to knock Tate out. He told me I was running out of time and it was now or never so you better do it! I sat in my corner and recited the 23rd Psalm to myself and asked the Lord to give me the strength to knock him out. He gave me more than I needed," said Mike Weaver in a 2016 interview with Ringside Report.
Weaver knocked Tate out with a left hook. Tate laid unconscious, face down and spread eagle on the canvas as he was counted out.
"The crowd cost Tate the fight," Weaver said afterwards. "He made the mistake of trying to come out and slug with me. He was boxing before that. He was responding to the crowd."
If Tate had defeated Weaver, his next opponent was expected to be Muhammad Ali.

It been 43 years since I saw that incredible KO for the first on TV in 1980. It still is exciting to see Weaver KO Big John.

The ONLY fighter in Heavyweight history who was losing on EVERY scorecard going into the
LAST round who would need a Knock Out to win - and got it with just 60 seconds left!
I saw it live on ABC Sports in the afternoon back when you could actually watch BIG fights for free!
It was incredible because underdog Weaver looked like he stood zero chance

This is what makes the heavyweight division so unpredictable. All of these heavyweight can end a fight with just one punch.

Saw this fight, on regular TV, believe it was a late Saturday afternoon. That’s how they did it then. Great fight, Tate had this fight locked up, out of nowhere Weaver puts him to sleep. That’s what makes boxing so great. I miss these days of Howard Cosell calling great fights right on your TV, no ppv, didn’t need cable, these were glory days for boxing fans.

You could tell it was going to be the left hook... He landed it clean a few times and finally got him with it for good!

All John tate needed to do was stay away from the lift hook he had the fight won and he was going to the score card he was winning all the rounds and he lost at the very end I was putting for him I really thought he was going to win the fight but he let weaver hit him with the left hook and he went face down

Damn. John Tate died all the way back in 1998. Had a brain tumor and stroke and wrecked his truck.
