Too bad, I'm a certified marine biologist. It started with a thesis on a starfish that I found on the beach

I almost studied Marine Biology because of my love of sharks 🦈 but I researched the potential dangers in the ocean and the issues around research funding and changed my mind. However for those who are passionate about this career, these things won’t matter so much….best wishes for those that choose this career going forward

I think one of the best things to do is get as much experience as you can starting from your first year in university. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities, especially if there are research labs in your school. Even if you don't plan to be in academia in the future, research experience can be invaluable for many positions. In the US, take advantage of REU's (Research Experience for Undergraduates) that pay you to do research over the summer at schools all over the country.

It didn't really hit me how competitive this field would be until I graduated. While I've been lucky to get a few jobs, they've mostly lasted for a few months; the instability is definitely real, and finding a full time job can be quite difficult. All the points in this video are definitely valid, but even with all the downsides, I couldn't see myself doing anything else.

It's better to live a life doing what you like, even though you won't be able to have a luxurious life than live to meet other people's expectations (especially your family's expectations)

Boy is this so true! Almost outlines what the PhD process is like as well! I always heard that if you do what you love, the rest will always fall together! Oceanography work is always worth it! Thanks for the video!

Thank you for making this video. It gives me reassurance in a weird way knowing what I’m getting into. I’m majoring in marine biology and starting my first year of college in the fall and this is great to hear!!

Ive been wanting to be a marine biologist since before i can remember. I've always been super passionate about the ocean and I love sea creatures! I really thought this was the right job for me, but ive always debated with myself about the traveling, and this video kind of confirmed it. I want to be involved with the ocean very badly, but I just dont want to travel much :( Should I continue to look into becoming a marine biologist/marine mammal scientist? Or do you think I should check out other jobs? If I should look at other jobs, what are other jobs that would keep me involved with the ocean without traveling? (ps thank you for all of your videos- theyre super helpful!)

I love and appreciate content like this! I’ve been subscribed since 2017, back when I was first figuring out if I really wanted to pursue marine biology. Videos like this really helped me confirm this was my ideal career path :)

Hi! I’m Hifza. A 10year old girl👩🏻, studying in 6th standard. it's been my biggest dream from a small age to become a marine biologist, and reach the bottom of the MARIANA TRENCH. I love to explore the sea, go very deep into the 🐳🐬ocean🦈 and see all those beautiful and amazing creatures🐠🦑🐙 e.t.c... but the only problem is that I don't know😌 swimming as well as diving. is it really important to learn diving from a small age to be a very skilled aquatic biologist??.... I've heard someone say it in one of their YouTube video. The video you uploaded about the 5 reasons y u should become a marine biologist, made me brave and excited. No matter how much effort I have to take, how many problems I have to face….I will surely achieve my dream.
