Which breed do you prefer? The Bernese Mountain Dog or Saint Bernard?

I have (obviously by the photo) a lot of experience with Berners. I was quite proficient at obedience training when I got my first Berner, which may be why I did not find them to be difficult to train. However, I still enrolled each one in a puppy class for socialization purposes, and would advise anyone with a new dog, especially a large one, to do the same. Although some Berners die as young as five years old, one of mine lived to age 15. However much time you have with a Berner, the dog will fill your life with beauty, love, and a deep feeling of connection to nature. The sorrow of loss is great, but I would not have missed it for the world. And, by the way, Berners don't drool much unless they are very hot or looking at a treat.

Well, since I own a BMD, my heart goes to them. But who doesn’t love a St Bernard? The choice between the two would be a difficult one, either would make a perfect large breed family pet.

Bernese if you want the best family dog, but you have to know they have the shortest lifespan of ALL DOGS, and when they die....Well, they're like family members, you'll have this feeling since the first moment. They love their family, and families love them.

Having had 9 Berners over 31 yr, I would disagree with the "drooler" designation at 8:42. Their lips are certainly loose, but it's really only an issue when they drink (which they do a lot!), leaving large puddles immediately around the water bowl. We keep a rubber-backed rug under the water dish at all times to sop up the excess. Eating can be messy too, but usually not an issue because they'll generally clean up after themselves—yes, they're also gluttons and you'll need to monitor weight and control feeding.
The only other thing potential owners need to consider is how NEEDY the breed is for their people. They do not do well left alone for long periods (>2 hr) and can be destructive if their person goes AWOL for any length of time. This can be so extreme they may attach to one family member and NEVER leave their side (even to the bathroom!) as happened to a rescue my parents had.
Otherwise spot-on!

I had a Bernese therapy dog. She was a work dog and brought joy to lots of children. She was super obedient and knew many tricks. Plus, she was easy to train. She didn't drool at all, so I didn't know that was a concern. She died at age 10 - two days after her 10th birthday, from cancer.

I used to breed Saint Bernards. They are beautiful natured and loyal dogs. I've been waiting two years for my Bernese Mountain dog and now due to covid it looks like 2022. Cant wait.

I have had both breeds. I currently have a 5 year old Bernes. The biggest difference i noticed between the two breeds is the incredible strength of a fit St Bernard. Incredible. The Bernese require mor maintenance because of their double layer coat. Although both awexome breeds i think my Bernese gives back way more love. Very snuggly

Totally admire both. I have had and loved rescue dogs, various gorgeous characters. I’ve owned a rescued Alsatian, who was taller than me on his hind legs. I loved him, I groomed him and really looked after him. He came to me a bit worse for wear but showed such loyalty, this dog was an adult and never chewed one thing in my house until my mother in law took her shoes off and put them under the coffee table!!
We bought a pedigree Labrador, who actually chose us as much the other way round. She was, truly a Walt Disney dog, too long a list.

Here’s my question. I’m 63, about to loose my job as a Nurse, plenty tears over that. Worse still is that I have a very severs form of Asthma. Not nice, wasn’t properly diagnosed for far too long. Even although as a Nurse, I told Doctors that it felt like Asthma. Ended up extremely ill.
I know there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. I would love to have a dog in my life.
Actually, I’m being selfish. I can get out of breath even with the weather. Forgive me telling you this.
You see? I bought a beautiful 8 berth caravan with double glazing and central heating. My grandchildren and family love it.
The walk to the most serene beach is maximum 5 minutes away.
Can’t stand not having a dog to take to that beach and just be connected with a character to share life with.
Can you recommend a breed that doesn’t cast, has life and character but doesn’t need long walks?

I have a St. Bernard Boxer mix. She is a wonderful 10 year old. A friend of mine had a St. Bernard Golden Retriever mix that lived to be 18. So if you take good care they can live very good long lives. I excercise and feed her the right foods. The only problem she has is arthritis. We are dealing with.

I have owned Saints since 1991. Just got my first Berner 6 years ago. Both are amazing. I would get both again. Only pure bred, and only with a lot of research regarding the breeder. The Berner is a clown, which is awesome. The Saint is just calm and quiet. My saints weighed more than I did, so early training is an absolute.

Bernese whose origin is Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Russia). Rarely affected by the diseases and defects of their Western European peers (Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, France, Italy, etc.), there has been no mixing between Eastern and Western breeders.

Absolutely love your video style and content. I always appreciate well organized and helpful facts about animals. It's exactly what I love doing on my channel but for plants and herbs.

I've had 3 different st bernards over 19 years. They truly are great dogs and not only dogs, but as a full time family members. Nowdays I almost desperetly want to get myself a bernese mountain dog. I gues there isn't much different with their personality and all the other great features compare to st bernard.

I agreed with you about the Bernese except for the drooling. We choose our two Bernese because out of all the mastiff the Bernese are the only ones that don’t drool. Well, maybe when they see food.
