Lyrics:
Little girl with a perfect smile
Learned to talk, learned to walk every extra mile
Little girl with the perfect painted skin
Learned to just only apologize again

I never got a chance to decide
What I did, who I was
Was idealized
If I ever crossed a dotted line
It was shamed, it was tamed
And it was criticized

I wanna be big
I wanna be bold
But I’m doing as I’m told
I wanna be seen
I wanna be loud
But they’ll never hear a sound
How can I recognize
When it’s my time when I was never allowed to try

That’s why
Girls, girls can’t drive
Oh, girls can't drive

Since I’ve been so powerless
I backseat drive, manipulative
Survival is a learned lesson
So I do what it takes, do what it takes to win

I wanna be big
I wanna be bold
But I’m doing as I’m told
I wanna be seen
I wanna be loud
But they’ll never hear a sound
How can I recognize
When it’s my time when I was never allowed to try

That’s why
Girls, girls can’t drive

For so long, I’ve kept what
what I want deep in
So if I said it out loud
I wouldn’t believe it

I’m gonna be big
I’m gonna be bold
I won’t do as I am told
I’m gonna be seen
I’m gonna be loud
Until they hear every sound
How can I recognize
When it’s my time when I was never allowed to try

That’s why
Girls, girls can’t drive
Girls can’t drive
Girls, girls can’t drive
Girls can’t drive
Girls, girls can't drive

I noticed how the pastel lighting represents the control (from her mother), dim lighting represents her sadness, and the vibrant patterns represent her anger and awareness of herself. This number is so genius and well directed honestly

Her and Hazel have the best solo songs in the show. I never thought I would relate to Susan honestly, I felt everything she sang in this song personally

I love the double meaning behind the song. When she’s singing girls can’t drive, she’s singing about how she’s thinking girls can’t get their driver’s license and have a drive to do anything. It’s terrible that she thinks those things though. I just love the lyrics.

I love this song so much! It's one of my top songs from the season. I adore how the Soc girls get the chance to break free (even if it's just in Susan's imagination). Jamal's choreography and directoral vision really brought Justin's lyrics to life! We NEED a season 2!!!

My mother is 89 years old. When she was a teenager her parents sent her away to an all-girl boarding school. She says there were events where they were taught how to act at a dinner table, how to walk, how to sit, stuff like that. The first part of this vid reminded me of her experiences...

I’m obsessed with the whole modernized 1950s style in this song.

When the show comes back (not if, when), I want to see Susans mother because outraged at the sight of Elvis Presley on the tv, but also become hot and flustered by his hips and legs. I want to see her examining herself in the mirror like she's considering 'I'm still a young woman' like she was wondering if she could still catch the interest of the 20 year old truck drive with blue eyes dyed black hair - meaning Elvis. Not in a redemption arc, but so that Susan can get some satisfaction in seeing that her mother for all her pursed lips and criticisms isn't so above it all as she still gets hot and bothered over rock and roll and can say to her "Careful mother. You should fix your face up before you leave. What would the neighbours think?"

2:18 She really said “Who says that I can’t wear my converse with my dress?”
(It could be a nod to that 2008 fashion choice)

I understand that song. I have always wanted to be loud, to be seen. But I’ve only been seen like the freak in school. I was bullied and tried to make myself invisible. When all I wanted was to be free to do whatever I could do!

I'm still hoping someone will tell Susan to really look at her mother and ask her if she wants to be like that because 'Do you really think your mother is happy?'

I kept trying to think what song was before this one, before I realized this episode only had two songs.
