Sorry for the longer video. There is a lot of info to cover and reasoning. This video is for mostly beginners, but perhaps may also have some tips for enthusiasts too.

*PLEASE READ...
I have mentioned that I don't water my garden at all and have grown many large melons without issues. This is due to the grass clippings helping retain moisture in the soil. Clippings also release nitrogen and its impossible to use too much as a source of nitrogen. People attribute nitrogen release to chemical fertilizers. Organics such as grass clippings is slow release and cannot burn plants like chemical fertilizers can. Anyway, what I'm getting at is, this season I chose to use a type of melon that has a long maturity time. Because melons need 70f plus temps and night which only happens in the 2nd to 3rd month of the summer here, I decided to water this season if I want to have any chance at getting anything much larger than a 50lb melon. It's not that the melons won't grow, it's that by the time they start growing there needs to be plenty of vines and leaves to absorb enough energy to produce a very large melon since that's what i'm hoping for...at least an 80lb'er

I have never had an issue with germination with any plants, except onions. We are in Florida so that is probably why. Started in Miami and now in Ocala. Ocala is a lot cooler in the fall summer and spring but actually hotter in the summer (only during the day, the nights are cooler in Ocala). In Miami, the seeds germinated within a week. I was spoiled for sure! We will see how it goes up here, but with temps in the 80s already, I don't think there will be an issue.

Oh, as I'm typing this, I am listening to your video....we have sandy soil here, unlike the clay you have, lol. Another lucky stroke for being in Florida....unless you want to grow anything else, lol. Great stuff.

First year trying to grow watermelons. The seeds sprouted quickly and I have just transplanted into a compost mixed with crushed eggshells. Only time will tell.

I haven't gone wrong by letting the main stem dry up before picking the melon. That and watching for the yellow belly and the hollow, resonate sound when the melon is thumped.

Hello again! My vines have multiple fruits on them but they all keep falling off. Do I need to hand pollinate them? The issue I’m having with that is the female flower is closed and never open. Is there a time of the day where it is open?

I have a question in regards to Carolina Crosses. I'm currently growing them and having a hard time getting them to germinate. Those seeds are massive and I was chalking up the germination time to how large those seeds are. Do they typically take more than a week to grow or two?

Very fortunate for me. I was planning to plant watermelons tomorrow. Seedlings are 3 weeks old but going to use them anyway. Maybe I can direct sew an extra seed in the mound. How large should the mound be for a 3 plant mound? 4 ft2? 9 ft2?

I don’t plan on growing watermelon but still very much enjoying your channel. Not enough growers on YouTube. You’re becoming one of my favs. I really like how you explain things clearly and show your methods and results. No fake hgtv flair. If you haven’t check out Khang Starr, I would recommend his channel. I think you guys are a lot alike. In a good way. 👍🏽
