The building where they run the experiment here at MSU has a giant 70, 000 made of sticky notes across one of its windows

I Remember that a fish in an American lake got more armored and bigger in response to a new predator and specimen from the 50s and now are very different

The fact we have plants that evolve a resistance to herbicides, insects that evolve a resistance to insecticides, and bacteria that likewise evolve a resistance to anti-biotics, all show evolution in action.

I for one welcome our new E.coli masters and overlords.

goddamn i remember when they covered this experiment in biology class in high school like 15 years ago, when this experiment was like halfway along to this point. They had passed 30k already and that was the big deal marker at the time

The citrate is such a wild development. So damn cool

don't forget the woman growing silver foxes in Russia since the 70s. she has split them into wild and tame lines and the tame lines are genetically different

It’s like the game spore, but in real life. So cool.

Some people: We cannot see Evolution, so it doesn't exists!
Scientists: *Observe*

We can/have watched evolution with animals too

Like elephants evolving to not have tusks, rattle snakes to not have rattles, foxes evolving to be a darker colour, and more

A nice reminder that antibiotics are a trivial obstacle for bacteria able to survive and mutate, especially given enough time.

70K generations...35 years, 2K per year. 5.5 generations per day.

Imagine who is watching us evolve in our Petri dish 😳

The problem with deniers of evolution is that in this case they would label these data as cases of intraspecific evolution, because those lineages of bacteria can't show the loss of the ability to mate with other lineages (for having mitotic reproduction of course).

As a correction, some E.Coli strains are known in nature to metabolize citrate. E. Coli already uses the citric acid cycle, which utilizes citrate. The reason they usually can’t metabolize it is because they cannot directly get citrate through the cell wall. The ability to move citrate into the cell wall was a new adaptation, but it should be known that this is a more common adaptation that occurs in nature.

E Coli is so remarkably useful as a testbed for genegeneering experiments. One I've heard recently added spider genes for making webbing proteins (growing the E Coli in bulk vats) which they've then extracted & turned into an incredibly strong thread - crazy.

Honestly, you can already see evolution in watching any countries human population. For example people in the Netherlands are crazy tall. Like, it's not rare to see women who are over 5ft9 and men who are over 6ft4. I'm 5ft6 and I felt so small there and I was born just a few thousand kilometers away.

Legend has it that one of the cultures re-evolved little dinosaurs that snapped off a scientist’s finger before they hastily shut that one down.

Brilliant, thanks! This is the first 'shorts' - of any channel - I've actually liked and would love to know more.

I predict a simpsons style mini world with bacteria people worshipping the research team as their pantheon of gods
