On this episode of What's Going on With Shipping, Sal Mercogliano - Chair of the Department of History, Criminal Justice and Political Science at Campbell University, former merchant mariner, and adjunct professor of Maritime Industry Policy at the US Merchant Marine Academy - discusses the story about the fierce fight between alliances for market share on the trade routes between Asia to Europe and North America. The episode examines the current situation in ports in Asia and America, the delays being experienced in Los Angeles and Long Beach, and what may explain the decline in percentage of the large alliances versus non-alliance shippers.

DR. SAL! YOU were just featured on the Science Chanel's "Engineering Catastrophes". The Suez Canal/Evergiven grounding. So good to see your smiling countenance. Edits were good, and you were succinct. Your final statement ended the segment. Your Star is surely rising. Congrats!

Loved this one. Such a complex subject, I literally had no idea until I started watching your channel. Keep it up and good luck with your presentation at the Academy.

Can you plan to do a video to explain how they keep track of all the containers once they are unloaded? Thanks for all the info.

Port of Long Beach announcement on completion of Middle Harbor project is fantastic but premature. The berths cannot be fully utilized until old bridge is removed. Vessel height limitation.
Long Beach Press Telegram July 13, 2021 article: “The Long Beach harbor commission approved a $27.5 million contract for a Washington construction company to demolish the old Gerald Desmond Bridge, a massive project that is preliminarily scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022 and finish in 2024.”

Hi Sal, I am new to your channel but I love your content! Would love to hear more about how the alliances and how alliance members become Independent? What do you think this is indicative of? Why would an alliance member pursue such a strategy which can only be seen as increasing competitiveness? Just some thoughts hope to hear your answers and ideas over the coming episodes

Great news!
Let the manufacturing take place locally.
This will save fuel and jobs.

At 12:27 look at how long some of those inbound vessels sat at anchorage before arrival at berth. Several upwards of 2 weeks. Wow! :-0

Sal is there any update on the status of the Home Depot contracted container ship? Just curious how that arrangement is working out for Home Depot.

I am intrigued by a sales pitch made by pretty much every agent who sells secondhand containers for use by citizens for storage or building houses etc. They always tell you "the container is in very good condition because it only did one sea voyage".
Is this actually true that most containers only do one sea voyage? Or is it just a sales spiel? Some containers look like they have been around the world 20times they are so beaten up and rusty.
With the accumulation of empties due to current freight blockages, is it possible there will be a glut of empties for sale to the public in the near future? And hence a significant price drop?

Hello Sal, very good video. Freight prices are crazy from Asia to Central America, we are looking into other options, do you think there is a chance that Independent Carriers have better prices and which companies would you recommend? Thanks!
