South African elections: Rising tension over illegal migration | BBC News

There is rising tension in South Africa over illegal migration - and it's dominating the political agenda in the run up to next month's general election.

The government claims it's tightening security on its borders.

But the BBC visited the country's busiest crossing post and witnessed migrants crossing unchallenged.

It's a way in for those seeking a better life - but an easy target, too, for criminal gangs.

Zimbabwean problems are not going to be dumped on poor South Africans. We going to defend ourselves since the stupid ANC government failed to protect us. Foreigners are not going to work when South Africans are not working.

Let me not start about the ANC, but only say this : SA last had borders when we were in the army. Those borders are now scrap metal.

Its been happening for YEARS 💔 when we complain about it we are labelled xenophobic, self-hating, etc. The word "xenophobia" has almost lost its meaning here, to us the word almost means that we are patriotic and are willing to do anything and everything to protect our country from people who came to destroy it. They can call us xenophobic all they want, we really don't care anymore. It has zero effect!🤞🏾
