How a tiny Scottish island relies on wind, water, and solar energy - BBC News

The community living on the Scottish Isle of Eigg were the first in the world to set up their own off-grid energy system powered by wind, water and the Sun.

The tiny island has shown it’s possible to rely almost entirely on renewables.

Since it was launched in 2008, they have received visitors from several other countries wanting to learn more about the project.

Community Energy Malawi, who help to set up renewable energy systems across Malawi, used their experience to set up a solar minigrid in Sitolo village, a community that previously relied on fossil fuels and firewood.

Great community spirit they’ve got. The whole island is a team.

Fascinating, not only in terms of energy production, or in terms of income generating activities, but also in terms of a system that can be replicated the world over.

Looks like a very peaceful quaint island with friendly people. Some heavens on earth left ig.

At Community Energy Malawi are pleased to mention that we were inspired by the Eigg Story. After visiting the Isle, we were able to set up our very first minigrid in Malawi. This video clearly demonstrates how cross fertilizations of ideas through learning journeys can inspire positive developments in communities. Our project work has even been shortlisted for the ASHDEN Awards 2022.

Sitolo is very talented, wish him every success, and well done Eigg!! :D

Renewable energy decentralizes power production and puts it in the hands of the people. It is more efficient and beneficial for local communities and reinforces the grid. Not to mention, it is sovereign energy.

Amazing how a community can organise and manage such a important resource themselves, we in RSA should take note.

Electric power isn’t that tight once you get it sorted, the wind and rain don’t go on standby much around there!

Wow, if I was young I would move there and start planting trees.

lithium ion battery storage lasts longer. such a storage system does not have to be replaced for close to 20 years.

Use of Solar power in good way is the best and same it is safe too rather than coal power use.

Given the very low (comparatively speaking) cost of battery storage, now, I'd have thought each house having a small (10kWh?) battery, 2-4kW of PV and a 5-10kW inverter would distribute the cost of what would constitute a huge upgrade and make the whole thing much more resilient and effective. Ideally link it all together via the interweb and all the storage and generation could be coordinated for even more efficient use. Lots of funding out there for this sort of thing at the moment.

It’s great for a tiny and hardly inhabited island.
