Nintendo did “virtual reality” in 1995! Was it any good?

Sorry about the audio at the end of the video! Bloomin’ nightmare!! Thanks for checking this video out! Thought it would be nice to unbox and check out a virtual boy since I’ve not actually used one before! Hope you enjoy!

Oh and thank you for watching the AD! As I am sure you are aware the help is much appreciated as I still don’t have a shower. This is paying for the bathroom to be done!

The rectangular cardboard thing is just a protector for the eyeshade during shipping. On an unopened Virtual Boy, it would be placed around the shade to prevent the spongy stuff from getting messed up.

They’re 26 years old now. Don’t they deserve to be called a Virtual MAN? Even if they do live in a lot of parents basements.

I remember playing one in a Walmart when I was a kid. They had Mario Tennis set up, and it was pretty fun. I think what really killed it was the all-red color scheme.

Gunpei Yakoi wasn't fired. He was planning his departure from Nintendo before the Virtual Boy, viewing making it for Nintendo his parting gift.
But Nintendo limited development and we got this.

In Japan, space can be pretty limited... especially in the big cities. "Toys" were often used and put away right after use. It was uncommon to leave game consoles set up and would be put away after use. That would explain the repacking instructions. Poor Gunpei Yokoi "went over to Bandai.." to develop a GameBoy competitor and then died in an unusual traffic accident. A car break checked him on the freeway causing him to crash. He then stepped out of his car and was killed by another car just as he stepped out.

Gunpei Yokoi wasn't fired from Nintendo, he had been planning for quite a while prior to resign at 55 so he could work more independently, it just coincided with the VB's release
Absolutely loving your content though, Elliot. Keep up the amazing work, and good luck with your house!!

The color of the Virtual Boy goes with the bloodshot eyes you'll have after using it.

Actually I believe the reason for the stand was because Nintendo feared kids strapping it to their heads and running around, potentially endangering themselves. By forcing people to play it sitting down, they avoided that risk.

Gunpey Yokoi was NOT fired from Nintendo due to the Virtual Boys commercial failure. He had already decided to retire at age 50 to spend time on his own projects and ideas but delayed that retirement to continue his role at Nintendo per their request. Gunpey Yokoi did not want to release the Virtual Boy as it was, he felt that it needed more work and further refinement, however it was Nintendo who insisted that it be released as they wanted to concentrate development on the N64. When Gunpey finally left Nintendo, several of his staff left with him as Gunpey started the Koto company, which lead to the development of the impressive WonderSwan. Great video but Elliot, please do your fact checking first.

Gunpei Yokoi wasn't fired because of the failure of the Virtual Boy, he was planning on leaving anyway around that time and he hoped the success of the Virtual Boy would be a parting gift to Nintendo.

I have a Virtual Boy, it’s really underrated! Glad to see you doing a review on it!

I'm surprised you found one in the box for that cheap

Emulating isn’t bad, it’s one of the best ways to preserve gaming history second only to original equipment. (Which will degrade and die eventually)

I got a headache just watching him play it

I know this may sound weird but one of my things on my bucket list is to try out a Virtual Boy.

You do know emulation isn't bad. Sharing backups is. So along as you own the game and backup equipment your all good emulate till your heart contents

youtube does support vr viewing for any 360 video,
but I guess that doesn't really let you do the two different views that would be needed to really show what the vr on this looks like

This came out when I was in college, and the local Toys 'R Us was liquidating them for something like $75 for the headset and a complete collection of games. I kind of regret not picking it up, but I had to choose between that and surviving to eat that month, and I opted for basic survival.

Finding one for £100 is an amazing deal.
