Nintendo Virtual Boy Retrospective + Gameplay

The Nintendo Virtual Boy was both a technical marvel and literal pain in the neck to the very few who bought one back in 1995. I take a fresh look at this portable console and come away with a better understanding as to why it bombed at retail and yet still commands a loyal following to this day!

I always thought it was more comfy to lay back on a couch and let the virtual boy's weight rest against your face. Saves the issue of bad neck from leaning in. Love your channel Metal Jesus, you rock! SUBBED

It's really nice to know they came back years later with the 3DS and fucking nailed it. Get the right one for you, and your hand size (3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS), and you will fall in love, once I got one the appropriate size for my hands, I did almost immediately.

Cool jumping into an old video and still hearing that great riff.

@MasterLarper - Every single game you start up in the Virtual Boy prompts you to turn on Auto Pause after a few minutes. Every single game! Clearly Nintendo was concerned about damaging people's eye sight. That said, I've heard that the 3DS has a bunch of health warnings as well.

Truth to be told, during the dawn of WonderSwan, Gunpei Yokoi mentioned that the Virtual Boy, if finished and not released in prototype status, it would've had color.

Just picked one up yesterday...such an underrated system, but I can definitely see why it didn't sell!

The games were fun as shit, and anyone who disagrees never actually played a real Virtual Boy.

@canceresbunny - Yep, it's called Red Alarm... I completely spaced it while recording my voice over. DOH!

Why yes I am. I honestly thought I would play it for 10 minutes the 1st time playing, but it Mario's Tennis and Galactic Pinball kept me busy for an hour instead! I don't know what it was that kept me hooked, Probably the cool 3D effects, the red and black graphics, and the fact that when you play a Virtual Boy game, all you see is the game, and it actually does feel a little like virtual reality when playing it late at night with all the lights out.

Just picked one up off of Craigslist, got a great buy, it's in excellent shape and met a pretty cool fellow collector, really enjoyed this video!

i own one and i love it. I'm a bit of a 3D enthusiast and I love what they were able to do.

I find it surprising that no one knows much about it because I'm 30, from Elizabeth, NJ and knew 3 people growing up who had one. Statistically speaking that's 3 people in one small city.

Even if it was a commercial failure, it was pretty innovative at the time and Galactic Pinball has to be one of the best pinball games I have played IMO, plus I loved the stereo sound and music/sound effects for the Galactic pinball, really immersed you in the game. Nice game collection!

Metal Jesus you say "it was only on sale in A LOT of countries for less than a year!" It only ever saw the light of day in Japan and north America which is a crying shame because I live in the UK and love the VB, Wario Land is awesome, people don't believe the haters its a cracking console, dead way to early, and way to few games!
