Block 9 ~ Flower Power Quilt-a-long FINALE

We've quilted Tulips and Daisys, Daffodils and Lilys, Iris and Fushias, and what a journey it has been. Today we quilt the final block of our Flower Power Quilt-a-long, and Ive saved my favourite flower until last, the Sunflower. I am absolutely awestruck by the blocks everyone has created over the last three weeks. I have loved seeing everyone's creative confidence thrive and your skills in Free-Motion Quilting grow from strength to strength. How far have you come from your very first Tulip block? You may just surprise yourself.

Finishing Instructions
This is a modified Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) technique. I find this woks best for people when we do a Quilt-a-long as it builds confidence as you are only tackling one block at a time.

Step 1: Iron all your blocks. Depending on how big your initial blocks started, trim each block leaving a border between 1 to 2".

Step 2: Decide on your 9-patch layout. Place each block side by side and use a wide open zigzag on your machine to stitch each block together. Ensure to keep the joins flat - normal seams would be too lumpy.

Step 3: Create a row of 3 blocks and then stitch all 3 rows together using the above method.

Step 4: Cut 8 lengths of coordinating fabric to become the faux sashings and binding. For the sashings, you could use a wide bias tape, some ribbon or a lace trim. These are stitched on top to cover the zig zag joins.

Step 5: Now select a fabric for the backing to suit the size top you have created. Cut batting the same size as the backing and sandwich the 3 layers together. I suggest you ditch stitch the faux sashings and ditch stitch the main block outlines as a minimum, or quilt over all the black sharpie outlines in black thread. You may decide to quilt in the sashings too.

Step 6: Add binding to complete and a label with the date.

Thank you so much, Helen for sharing your talents and experience with us. This has been a fun project to do during our time of isolation. I have free-motion quilted for a while, but your style is new to me and I have enjoyed trying new patterns. Thanks!

Still colouring my blocks so not got to the fun part - quilting - yet, but just wanted to say a massive thank you to you Helen for sharing your work with us, I am enjoying doing this at my own speed and know I can look at the You Tube classes anytime I get stuck. After this I am going to indulge in the Elizabeth's Lost Dress patterns they are so beautiful, so I have that to look forward to at some point in the future. Many many thanks from Jan in UK

Wow, what an Awesome gift you have given us. I've never painted on material before or turn around and thread paint. I am so impressed with this technique and it has my mind exploding with possibilities. THANK YOU HELEN GODDEN!!

Thanks Helen really enjoyed this and gaining more confidence with some of the quilting designs that I was a bit scared of in Feathered Friends. Can’t wait to put it together now.

Thank you Helen for this quilt-along. You are inspiring!!! You also make the micro quilting appear effortless... my attempts prove otherwise lol - works in progress. I would love to see a block of the month or QAL with a thoroughbred racing theme! 🐎 🏇 🏇

Thank you so much for keeping us busy while we are self distancing ourselves. I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorials. I got my Sweet Sixteen just about 2 years ago & I have gone to your videos for help several times. I love this machine & it makes free motion quilting so much easier & so much fun.

Thankyou so much Helen, for taking me to a different world of fmq, how to just play around with colourful threads, fabrics, designs. I need to practice more, but I always had a mind block that, fmq is tough, never attempted to give a try. But, now I gained confidence, because of the way you have guided and made to feel that fmq is amazing and need practice.
