Billy Paul ~ Me & Mrs Jones 1972 Soul Purrfection Version

If you are here because of "Scrubs", then you have come to the right place. I saw that episode the other night and could not get this atmospheric wonder of a soul song out of my head after Turk sang it to his gf. It's so dreamy and steamy, a naughty but oh so nice vibe going on, soothing and sexy. This was the one that knocked Helen Reddy's feminist chestbanger "I Am Woman" after her first week at the #1 spot back in da day, then Billy stayed on at #1 for three weeks! Important as a single, it was the first #1 for Philadelphia International and writer/producers Gamble and Huff. A pivotal #1 song that announced that the sound of Philadelphia had usurped the premiere position of the sound of young America, Motown. It's a smooth jazz inflected song from the house of Sigma, the home of MFSB who so brought so much light into my life back in 1972. To hear this coming over the brand new FM Radio that was top of the line, my dad's boss gave it to him, it was one of those multi-band things, AM, FM, CB, Police, etc....you could travel round the world through that radio dial. Any way, I felt very happy to hear this song then and today too! It's a classic hit that Billy Paul was never able to repeat. It still sounds fresh, dontcha think? I have always loved this one, the strings and vibrancy of the production are top notch and good work stands up forever.

THANK YOU!! My favorite song...period. I'm 57 and have played this (and all of the other Philly hits) all of my life. I have two sons, 22 and 24. A few years back my oldest was working as a waiter at Zio's (an Italian Garden type restaurant), one Saturday night he ran back to get a salad for a customer. They had an older retired African -American gentleman that worked part-time just doing salads and he had this song playing on an old boombox with a CD player singing along to it. My son walked up, started getting a salad and jumped right in with the older guy. This startled the guy so much he paused the song and asked how a young white kid like him knew the words to this song. My son explained that this was the kind of music he grew up with, that I played it al the time and that this was one of his favorites. He said the old guy smiled a huge smile and said, "Well son, then let's do it right." He turned the volume up, started the song from the beginning and they sang the whole thing together. Next thing he knew the whole restaurant was clapping, it had been loud enough that the customers could hear. The manager didn't stop them because it was one of her favorite songs as well. He made more tips that night than any other night he ever worked there. He split his tips 50/50 the older guy.
This and all of the Philly greats are loved and listened to by both of my sons. The greats passed on to another generation...

Hear that? It’s the 70’s calling us, telling us to come back a while & relax. Oh those were the days. And this song was as smooth as silk.

The greatest R&B songs of all time by the great Billy Paul… I bought all his albums he was so unique and so ahead of his time in his music, this was the start of his career as far as I was concerned but I made sure that I bought everything that came out from him, rest in peace your legacy lives on

This was # 1 in 1972 I remember this all over the radio, the talk of infidelity was the buzz but still it climbed the charts, people just couldn't help it, smooth as silk and sexy

Every time I hear this song I get teary eyed. I had a cousin Carl who died at 33 from colon cancer as I was driving to the church for his funeral this song came on.Whenever I hear this song I think about my cousin, I was a senior in high school now 63 years young.

Believe it or not, this song reminds me of growing up in L.A. and walking to school with my little pink AM transistor radio listening to 93 KHJ and songs like this would come on. I didn't know really what they were singing about I just knew "I Loved the Song!" Oh, the 70's are a GREAT time in life to remember and the music is the best to listen to! I love Rock n' Roll, Disco, Soul, Grunge, the Blues and Heavy Metal, but the 70's music is always my favorite go-to when I just wanna kick back, chill, and remember...

Absolutely superb reworking of this classic Philly love song. It takes a really special production talent to interpret these wonderful tracks and yet still retain the essence. If the original team and Billy Paul were around today they would welcome you aboard no doubt about that.
Through my Disco DJ years in the 70s 80s 90s this song was always a staple towards the end of the evening and I often mixed two separate singles to extend the magic and often thought it deserved a much longer mix.
Now added to my Mashups & Remixes YouTube playlist.
Keep up the great work 😎👌
