The Dialect of Moomin | The Finno-Swedish Identity of an Icon

Despite their international reach, there is a certain lingual flair to the Moomins and their world that is always lost in translation. Because of the way the books were initially written and what people enacted those stories, the Moomins quickly established a strong Finno-swedish identity in their mother-tongue, but never really anywhere else.

A very special thanks to:

Living with Kiki is basically constantly being surrounded by Moomin. I live Moomin. Breathe it.

As a swedish finn, i love this.
And you gotta know finnish to really pull off the finno-swedish dialect.

Keep up the good work!

my main complaint with the english dub of the 1990 series is the lack of fenno-swedish accents. I really wish they would release the fenno-swedish dub with english subtitles.

Thank you very much for this comprehensive video of the history of the language in the Moomins! I'm a Finn myself and grew up with the 90's Moomins, and I always found it "weird" that the Swedish dub of the series was in Finno-Swedish (cos surely Swedes would wanna have their dubbed content in "proper" Swedish, right? :'3) I always figured the people is charge of the dubs were lazy :P (my thought process being that since Finland's official languages are both Finnish and Swedish, and people have the constitutional right to have services in their mother tongue, it would be logical to have two dubs, one for the Finnish kids and the other for the Finno-Swedish kids, and they just distributed the Finno-Swedish dub in Sweden too, cos "why bother making two separate dubs in the same language?") But thanks to your video, it all makes perfect sense now, and I'm really happy I stumbled upon it (even if it is 2 years after the publishing of the vid :'3)
One other subject your vid also touches that has been bothering me a lot, is the image of Finno-Swedish being a "lesser" form of Swedish, even amongst us Finns ourselves. Cos during my many years spent in mandatory Swedish for the Finnish classes at school, there'd always (AL.WAYS.) be that one kid who'd be all smug and declare "I don't want to speak Finno-Swedish, I want to speak REAL Swedish". Okay yeah I get that we Finns like to dwell in our sense of backwardness and misery and stupidity, but c'mon fellow Finns, not everything we touch is automatically "gringe" and "foul" and "fake". Swedish is vast, it can handle a lil dialect and geocultural spin :D Anyway, rant over.
Thank you again for the video, it helped me understand the history of the Moomins better, and gave me a lot to think about :3

I loved this video, so interesting! As a Finn I grew up with both the Finnish and the Swedish dub. I also lived in the village where the actors for Lilla My and The Police Constable lived, they are actually a married couple so it was always kind of funny and strange to hear our neighbors talk as Moomin figures.

Thank you for making this video. I learned a lot from it. I now understand why some people don't really like the newer reboot. I wasn't able to pin point where moominvalley was set in when I first watched it, and only found out about its origins after I read about tove jansson.

First of all the only lover Snufkin is ever gonna be is nature's lover.
Fight me.
But all jokes aside this was one very beautiful and interesting video. That Moomin music that plays in the background brought up so many nostalgic memories. Thank you for making this amazing video.
Cheers from Finland. 😊

Fun fact: there are currently more than 80 Swedish dialects spoken in Finland. Finland-Swedish is NOT just one dialect.

This is so interesting! I knew from talking to Swedish friends that Finno-Swedish is called "Moomin Swedish" over there but I didn't know the full history! I thought it was just because of the 90's animated series. Thank you very much! (Also thank you for the respectful history lesson, I genuinely appreciate it)

This was a delight to watch! Editing was on point, and the script was just amazing. I really like how you gave a Swede insight on the differences between standard Swedish and Finno-Swedish even if it was with only an example of pronunciation, it really helps drive the point home. I never would have imagined how language would have shaped a large part of the franchise's identity, but now I know :)

I could listen to yall talk about moomin all day. I esp love the cultural insight, the finno-swedish stuff would've flown completely over my head without it. Ty for video!!!

I hope they fricking build the moomin park in my town, despite all the hate they are getting. The Karlstad citicents need to get real and realize how adorable moomin really are. Like CMON you can trash the MOTIONCENTRALEN(movement central) for the moomin park. Somehow I feel like a moomin hater will come to my house now and figure out my identity so they can post propaganda on my house... Its worth it :)
