1. Aerodynamics: Lycra is still less aerodynamic than simply riding naked
2. Comfort: No tailored jersey can come close to the comfort of riding naked, no matter the position
3. Chafing: Riding naked has zero chafe
4. Pockets: Okay, jerseys have an advantage here
5. Visibility: Nothing is as visible as a naked guy on an $8000 bike

I used to always wear a t-shirt when cycling because I thought that cycling-specific jerseys were too poser. Until I discovered the first rule of cycling clothes: pockets. And the second rule of cycling clothes: POCKETS!

My first cycling jersey circa 1975. No logos, no graphics - solid blue. Six inch zipper. Three pockets. Wool. Although I added others across time, continued to wear it for the next twenty years.

Honestly, the main thing that sold me on cycling jerseys were the pockets. I learned this the hard way when I went out riding with a partner, left my phone in the car because I had no way to carry them, and when we separated because she got a flat, I had no way of contacting her, couldn't find her for 40 minutes, and was convinced she got hit by a car and died. Needless to say, I was so freaked out I immediately went home and bought a jersey afterwards

I wear bibshorts and jersey in warmer weather. Agree on flapping and pockets. As it gets colder I keep the bib shorts but add running leggings and running tops under a cycling jacket (for the pockets). This has saved me a fortune over the years as I don't need much winter specific cycling kit.

back in the days when I was 16 (many many years ago 1968) I started racing in an Army team ... my mum thought it would be a good idea, and knitted me a woolen jersey with a 6 inch zip and pockets on the back ... got the plan & idea from watching racing on TV ... needless to say I didn't wear it (a bit itchy) except to try it on for size ... but that's how mothers support their sons :-)

Love your videos, and keep the good info coming! Always wear a jersey (for the benefits mentioned in this video)

I love my cycling jerseys. I prefer a full zip. I have about 50/50 shorts and bibs so it's nice to not have to think about which jersey I'm pairing with which shorts. I like to have three back pockets with a small zip pocket nestled in one of them for my keys. I like it when the accents are on the pockets since it's figure flattering. I look for UPF. I really want to get a summer weight long sleeve jersey. For now, I'm using sun sleeves. I went through a period where I had to gain some weight and now I'm losing but I need to wait and see where my body settles before spending $$$ on new kit.

Great video but leaves me wonder... How much drag are you saving wearing a cycling kit vs a t-shirt and pants. I would like to see a video going down a hill without pedaling and see how far you go. Also how do you know your proper size to choose from? bib shorts, jersey, and the like... there seems to be no official video on these subjects

Actually just bought and went for my first ride in a new Castelli jersey. First new jersey I've bought in ages. My old Le Coq Sportif jersey's pockets finally gave out.

Please can you do a video on cycling helmets. New to cycling and guidance and reputable brands would be useful

Has GCN considered a version of there kit that is highly reflective? I know the red is pretty easy to see but for travel in high traffic areas there are better color.

I bought both of my jerseys from a kilo sale in London. 2 for a fiver. Still wear them 4 years later

I always wear a jersey. Key criteria, can’t be red...must be versatile. I am not made of money and my fiancée wouldn’t want me to have more than 3-4 sets of kit, so everything needs to be interchangeable. Also, please make gcn kit that isn’t red. I hate red in cycling. It’s everywhere.
