Changing Aspect Ratio in Films – Marvel's FANTASTIC Use of MULTIPLE Aspect Ratios in WandaVision

We are pretty accustomed to seeing the 21:9 aspect ratio in films vs a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio for television, but I’ve never before seen a changing aspect ratio in films. However, after watching WandaVision, I got a first hand look at Marvel’s fantastic use of multiple aspect ratios in WandaVision and saw how even something as simple as an aspect ratio can be used to enhance the storytelling of your film!

Not only are there many different aspect ratios to use for film, there are also different ways of labeling them. The common ones are 16:9 (also 1.78:1), 21:9 (also 2.35:1), and 4:3 (also 1.33:1), and examples of each are shown in this WandaVision breakdown video to help you better understand times when it may be appropriate to use each of them. This video focuses on a WandaVision review to show aspect ratio explained and shows how aspect ratio and resolution are different from each other. With various aspect ratio comparisons, you can see how the aspect ratio DSLR video settings can be changed to to get a more cinematic aspect ratio using aspect ratio bars in editing such as pillarboxes or letterboxes and how they can even be changed mid-sequence like in the WandaVision aspect ratio changes. In this aspect ratio tutorial, you will learn from the WandaVision aspect ratio changes in order to know how to change the aspect ratio of your video for a cinematic look or other style.
