Germany honors Angela Merkel, who leaves chancellorship after 16 years

Germany is honoring Chancellor Angela Merkel for her 16 years of service to the country. CBS News reporter Anna Noryskiewicz spoke with CBSN's Tanya Rivero about Thursday's traditional sendoff celebration.

No, "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen" was not particularly "anti regime" from the start. It was just a ditty poking some relatively good-natured fun at small-minded small-town holiday makers - and as such was "unsuspicious". The specific anti-GDR-establishment meaning is an additional layer that became more pronounced only later, years after the song had been published in East Germany in 1974, which wouldnt have happened if the authorities had found it in any way "anti-regime", nor would it have beeen popularised by state-controlled radio stations.

What seemed "harmless" back then sounded much more rebellious in the years to come, for various reasons. Those things happen to songs all the time: Their "true meanings" change because the way audiences perceive them changes. In this case, among other things, Nina Hagen herself changed a lot, too. Eventually singing the song from the other side of the Berlin Wall as it were surely made an artistic difference and left no ambiguities as to where she stood.

Enter the 1990s style Besserwessi incapable of cultivating nuanced views on such things, namely that songs can have subtexts more subtle than the usual in-your-face variety.🙄

Trivia: Angela Merkel was the longest consecutive serving female non-royal national leader ever. She served for 16 years and 16 days, surpassing Vigdís Finnbogadóttir (former president of Iceland) by only 16 days on 22 November 2021.

the punk song is not nostalgic.. it is a very anti regime, almost anarchistic song when you listen to the lyrics.. it sounds very "easy listening" the first time.. but not when you put it into the context of the time and place. With the choice of the songs Dr. Merkel showed who she is.. a women from the east, and a pastor's daughter :)
