Hearing seismic surveying while underwater

Spearfishing off Cavo Greco,Cyprus can hear the Turkish ship "Barbaros" carrying out seismic surveys (illegally breaching the territorial waters of Cyprus). You can hear the first sound waves fired at 0:21 and subsequently every 10 seconds after that.
Definition of seismic surveying from wikipedia:
"Traditional marine seismic surveys are conducted using specially-equipped vessels that tow one or more cables containing a series of hydrophones at constant intervals....The seismic source, usually an airgun but other sources are available, is also deployed underneath the surface of the water and is located between the vessel and the first receiver. 2 sources are often used in order to achieve a fast rate of shooting....and the source is typically fired every 15 or 20 seconds.

The fishes look startled every time the air blasting occurs. Just imagine hearing this, every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 times a week in 5 months. bruh it'd be hell...

Happens at 0:41 and 0:51 and 1:03. It sounds to me like chi-bub bub bub... hope this helps! You don't need headphones at all just turn up the volume.

I didn't realize how loud it actually is until I put ear phones in. Jesus that's terrifying and the fish seem to react to it each time it happens. Even under all that water it's still that loud.

Sounds are so much louder underwater...its pretty insane.

"The biggest Seismic blasting vessel in the world coming in at a whopping 125 meters, travels around the ocean shooting an extremely loud air gun, 100, 000 times louder than a jet engine into the sea every 10 seconds. They do this in search for oil and gases."

Yeah I wasn't hearing it until I put headphones on. It's like very deep thuds echoing. Seeing the diver is pretty close to shore, this must be very devastating for any marine life near the blast zones.

For anyone who can't hear it:

I would recommend putting on some headphones, as your normal speakers might not be up for the task. You're listening for this echoing, crackly noise, like ice being broken on a frozen lake. You'll know it when you hear it.

straight after the beep, you can hear a odd explosion sound, that keeps appearing every 10 seconds.

Imagine how it sounds to whales dolphins and other sea mammals that have unique hearing?

0:20 0:30 0:40 0:50 you can hear it in 10 second intervals

You can definitely hear it with ear buds in. That is really scary sounding. That would be a good sound effect for an underwater sci-fi thriller movie. Kinda makes you wonder what’s coming out of the deep ocean after you!

is that what seismic serveillance sounds like?!

Heard this out in Fiji during Scuba, insanely loud.

Like how you’d imagine a lightning bolt might sound, very clear. No headphones required. Very low interval & low frequency - must be seismic imaging I guess, oil & gas. There’ll be a ship with a big streamer somewhere that’s causing it. Blurb says this is southern Cyprus and since the mid-00’s they’ve been talking about exploring gas fields around there & eastern Med, already carving it into blocs, guess this is hearing some of exploratory work.

A seismic air gun blast can reach 250 decibels. It would easily liquify a whale at close deployment of the device.

i don't know why they had to speed up the bloop when theres evidently plenty of underwater noises that are way scarier in realtime

it kinda just sounds like a dumptruck moving around my house

Imagine the current started to go out to sea fast taking him with it 😳😳

Yes this sounds very much like seismic source shooting, but for the people commenting, this is similar to lightning in the air, yes this is loud, but i have never seen any fish dead floatting at the surface after a shot, there are also, people onboard who's task is to check for visible wild life activity nearby ( dolphins, turtles, whales, etc...). By day, this remains to be done visually, by night they have sensors at sea to record for "clicks" from dolphins and whales, if detected, shooting is aborted til they get far enough from the source, these people are known as "mammal watchers", seismic companies are well aware of noise disturbances, and spend thousands of $$$ trying to minimize the environmental impact. Before a survey goes, survey locations have already been assessed for potential wild life activities, fishing activities, etc..., and only the countries deliver permits to perform seismic surveys if they choose to, with tons of rules to follow.

For those of you who cannot hear it - your speakers/headphones are terrible. It's a very loud explosion, but it's extremely low in frequency.
