6 - 1/5 =
5 5/5-1/5 = 5 4/5
That's how I learned it. Discern the simplest way to attack a problem.

There is a method #3. 5 5/5 - 1/5 = 5 4/5. The 6 can be written as 5 wholes and 5/5.

Wow. This is so long and complicated. We learned to make the denomination for both the same then subtract. I would have never learned this method.

Thank you my fellow teacher, T. Gon! You are a good help for those students who are struggling really hard in Math. With the method you are teaching us, you are making it easy for them and making them to appreciate and love Mathematics! ❤

I was learning "new math" from first through third grade. Then we moved. I walked into fourth grade and they were being taught division. I had no idea what they were doing and was too shy as the new kid to speak up. The teacher discussed this with my mother, but no one asked ME what the problem was. When I got to ninth grade they were teaching me algebra and I realized I already knew it. Sadly, it was too late and I had no desire to pay attention (I was more interested in the boys in my class by that time 🤣). I suck at math and now, even though showing me this, my brain clicks off and I can't/don't hear a word you are saying. I am 67 now and don't even want to try. Thank goodness for Google.

I was a dumbass in high school but mostly cause i was lazy,
but social studies and mathematics were the 2 things i always had 'A's and 'B's,
I had learned method number 2,
but method number 1 I had never seen before,
seems a little extra complicated to learn,
but, if it works, it works.
Love this video

Is there a future benefit to learning these methods? A fraction is, by definition less than 1. One can be expressed as a numerator over a denominator where both are equal. A whole number will be reduced by one anytime a fraction is subtracted. So you reduce the whole number by one (6-1=5). 1=5/5. To subtract 5/5-1/5, you just subtract the numerator of the second fraction from the numerator of the first fraction (5-1=4) which gives you ⅘, so the answer is 5⅘. You can do this in your head quite easily. The denominator can be any number (49/49=1). As long as the numerator and denominator match, the value is ONE. 7-⅔ is 7-1=6 and 3/3-⅔ (3-2=1) so 6⅓.

I really don't remember how to do this stuff or is this the new math. However, I still figure out the answer without doing any one of the methods

Once you have the same denominator; you can add or subtract.
