Bill shows you how to install a Pair of TMI Pony Door Panels on your 1965-1966 Mustang with Pony Interior.

Purchase Product Here:

Help give your 1965-1966 Mustang with Pony Interior interior new life with these Deluxe Pony style door panels from TMI. These are made with Masonite MDF wood backing, not flimsy cardboard backing that can easily deform especially when dampened by rain or snow. They feature original style heat seam line patterns and are offered in a variety of factory correct colors.

For installation, you'll first want to remove your original door panel. You'll then want to remove the water shield and the three screws that secure the door handle shaft to your door. Take out the old door handle shaft and replace it with your new one, and then re-install in the door.

Next, install the water shield to your door and then work on assembling the door panel for installation. This includes securing the panel trim and the pony door panel cup. Then install the bracket for the panel door cup to the door.

Line up the new pony door panel, squeeze the panel on, screw the door cup to the bracket, and install the door cup cover. Return the door handle and window crank to the door, and your installation is complete. Total installation should take up to 3 hours.

Pro tips:
Use the thick plastic bags the door panels come in to make your own water shields- use the door panel as a template, and once on the door with strip caulk, cut out the handle/crank and clip holes.
Carefully use a flathead screw driver to “open” up a tiny space between the panel board and the glued on material, prior to installing clips into the back of the door panel.
Before installing clips, line up the door panel to the door, and mark the panel clip holes in the direction that each clip should be, then install each clip with the marks
Take your time lining up each hole, lay on the ground to check bottom clips, make minor adjustments and when they’re all close enough, start at one of the front corners (too or bottom) and slowly work your way around in one direction

Thanks Bill, I haven't done anything yet but I'm considering doing some stuff on the door and I noticed that the silicone makes quite a mess.

I have a pony car and the door panels are original and in good shape and I want to keep them. But the card board backing is a mess can CJ supply that backing panel?

65 and 66 door panels are interchangable. To use clip on cranks you would need clip style 65 regulators which would be a lot of work and not really necessary.

Some of the clips don't line up with the holes in the door of my 1966 Mustang. Any suggestions?

I installed these on my 66 back in 2006.

my biggest gripe then and now, is it is not clear how to cut out the holes for the door pull "cup". there's no instruction included, and it's not mentioned in this video.  they just push the cup in, and don't show you how they cut it. what's up CJPP?
Maybe they're pre-cut now?  who knows?

now my experience:

I cut the first one out, cutting only 3 sides of the hole, leaving the long edge closest to the outside of the car sill attached.
On the second I reversed this because I didn't like how the first panel came out, leaving the long edge closest to the inside of the car, or the side you grab to close the door, attached.
over time the first one started to crack in the corners of the door pull, exposing the foam underneath.  The second one is holding up nicely.

I recommend cutting these on 3 sides only (or an X in the middle? no instructions!)
leaving the long edge closest to the inside of the car attached.. then reinforcing the edges with some heavy duty gorilla tape (out of sight and not bulky of course) or sewing on some seam reinforcement tape before install. these seem to suffer from bad original design as we all know the early mustangs were not designed to last this long.. lol
The door pull is where the panels wear out the quickest and really can't be helped if you're going for the original look..
so anticipate the wear and tear and reinforce where you cut, and try not to cut any corners, making your cut with a radius will help it from tearing.

I will end up doing mine over and following my own advice.

What is the part that is around the door panel called? And can you replace it? Like the part the panel goes on

My door handle and window crank on my 1966 Mustang Coupe aren't coming off with the removed tool. Is it possible that these aren't clip ons?

Could you use RTV gasket maker instead of strip caulk?

I am guessing you are referring to the grey silicone used by a previous owner to install paper watershields. I considered removing it but it would have been a lot of work and since its not visible it wasn't a big deal to leave it there

The 67 and 68 share the same door and the same door handle/window crank locations so there should be no issues using the 67 door panels on a 68

Putting the panel back on is not as easy as he makes it look!! All I can do is laugh at that part of this video!! I’m dealing with the original pony panels on my 65. They are worn out where u put the clips in the panel. I’ve got brand new clips but having problems either the clips fall out or I can’t get it lined up. If there’s any secrets to do this? I know it’s straight forward directions but I’m having issues!! Thanks

Hi!  I purchased my door panels a few years ago, but I haven't installed them yet.  I noticed that the panels have now warped. Is there anything I can do to try to flatten them?

If this really was the original door panel why change it? It looks in pretty good shape it just needs a fix for that crack
