I do the same trick to level up melee without mods. have four prisoners, remove their legs and then you can punch them a bit let them recover and repeat.

I think circadian assistant is the best implant for this. Pawn will work 20% longer and you can easily stun it with EMP when needed. ( Brain implants stun a pawn ) + catharsis mood buff.

Method I use to not prevent but reduce mental breaks is queue them up for an operation and set them to no medicine so they lay in the bed and never get up. I don't have the numbers to back this up but they seem to go a lot longer without mental breaks possibly because of time spent sleeping, increased comfort, or something else. I did this with a bunch of prisoners when I couldn't afford decent rooms and it seemed to work well
