Buying a new camera is fun and infuriating in equal measure in my experience. Sensors, megapixels, frame rates - it's all a joy to compare until it's not. This video is my attempt to break down some of the things I think about when I'm looking for a new camera. It's not an end to end course, it's just a few tips that'll hopefully end up improving your photography.

Thank you :)

Best advice on buying a camera - IMO at least - is pretty simple. The best camera for you is the one that you'll use. The tech today is so freakin' good that if you have any ability at all, they will all work. I went through the mania of camera buying for the first time 15 years ago, you will never find the right camera looking at stat sheets. Find one that is well regarded for ergonomics and handling, is actually fun to use and not a giant PITA and then immediately forget that all other cameras exist, and use the one that you bought with no looking back. That's just my opinion. :)

So glad someone finally addressed the fact that ergonomics is so important. One of the biggest reasons I stick with Canon is purely because they fit into my hand perfectly and the button layout just makes sense to me.

As a disabled photographer, this hits home for me as I have to use my left hand to hit the shutter. So, I developed an over-the-top claw grip to depress the shutter with my left index finger, . So the Canon APS-c line (60, 70, 80D etc.) having the ledge above the lens for the built on flash alls me to wedge my middle and ring finger under that to secure my grip. Try that sometime lol.

When I started watching this video, I wanted to upgrade my 9 year old camera. But now I have decided to save up for a Ferrari🙂🏎

Congratulations. Being married is great. I've been married for 33 years! I have no tips for you. I'm an idiot so it's all down to the wife :)

Less spent on a ring, the more you can spend on glass?!

I learnt this lesson when I thought I really wanted a mirrorless Olympus (I loved the retro styling), right up until I actually picked one up...

I had always been a Nikon shooter until I hefted some newer dslrs and decided very quickly a mirrorless Fujifilm felt better and lighter in the hand. So weight and size were big factors in making my choice ( not to mention it reminds me of my old Nikon film camera). I ramble too..again congrats to you both.

Very sound and immensely-viewable advice, James. Can't help noticing how happy Emily is looking in that shot. Don't even know you two, but something inside me makes me root for both of you.

I struggled when I bought my system as I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to take photos of. I knew I had an appreciation for the craft and that I wanted better photos of travels & wildlife viewing. Something light for air travel was important. I settled on Olympus after holding it & trying it out in my local store. That said I struggle with what type of photographer I am: wildlife, landscape, macro etc. I actually enjoy it all. I'm not sure what my point is by all this other than deciding what I wanted to take photos of was the hardest question to answer. Still is.

Congrats James! She's clearly a great catch, and it looks like you guys make a great team. All the best to both of you! And regarding the video topic: I agree completely about handling the camera before committing to a purchase. I immediately committed to the Panasonic/Lumix MFT system the first time I picked up a GH5 with my own hands. It completely drew me away from one of the other major systems. That was over 2 years ago, and I'm still excited to use the GH5 every day. I don't think I would still feel the same way had I gone with the other system I was considering at the time. Thanks for all the great content!

The point about the looks of the camera is a philosophy that's been quite well worked out in the guitar community. Especially for a beginner, the first thing most people recommend is "pick the guitar that will make you want to pick it up when you see it hanging on the wall". Playability is a very close second. As is the guitar, a camera is an instrument of the particular artform. And playing guitar, I have learned that instruments can very much be inspirational.

Another analogy that just came to mind. About the sensor. It's like guitar pickups. You won't make good music if you have the most amazing pickups in a guitar that feels like rubbish to play (rusty strings, high action, fret buzz, neck too thick/thin for your liking). You have to consider the physical instrument as a whole.
