From a guy who worked inside an ICANN registrar: No, it will probably not die. Some registry will just pick it up.

One possibility is that Microsoft buys the domain with their infinite money for the sole purpose of not having to change Github's URL

Keir Starmer's seat in No 10 was not even warm and he gave the islands with military significance up for Chinese influence.

Mauritius will probably take over it and use it as a source of revenue. Io domains are not in danger.

A certain country will make an artificial island in the Indian Ocean and take over the .io domain

Country TLDs are widely used outside of the US. In most countries in Europe the local TLD is what most companies primarily use except from big multinational ones.

Having hard rules is a tough sale when it's all kind-of arbitrary anyway and when they junked up the system with a whole bunch of money-grubbing TLDs a few years ago in any case. But really, what it all points to is that the domain name system is awkwardly engineered and that domain names have too much prominence because URLs are too visible to users.

.gb still exists because the UK gov and military had already started using it. So UK has both .gb and .uk.

The UK giving back parts of the Empire never created a problem. Hong Kong is a happy place these days.

There's a typo in the description: "given up by the UIK".

I still have my Globe night light from when I was a kid, still got the USSR on the map. I used to have a hobby of watching films from countries that done exists any more, an interesting way to see parts of the world forever gone.

Too much money sitting on these names, they will just probably make them as fancy TLD like .shop and make them to be associated with "input/output".

if time runs out for the websites to choose a new domain name, it will go byebye forever!

Since when you go to rent a domain, you can pretty much choose whatever TLD you want, I thought nobody actually cared about what means what.

this would have been a big problem if the internet was more popular in 1991 they had domains for Czechoslovakia and east Germany and Yugoslavia and the ussr. but nobody used those because almost nobody was using the internet back then at all. the Yugoslavia domain was still used in the 2000s so that one got some actual use and the Ussr domain never got cancelled for some reason but the internet is young.

It's still a bunch of islands in the Indian Ocean, no matter who holds soverenty over them. Makes no sense to retire it.

There's a Behind the Bastards about this set of islands. I recommend folks listen to it.

Look up Agaléga Island and Mauritius. This is all for military purposes.

Given up by the UK?! Glad to see remnants of British Empire crumble and the lands are given back to the native people! British Empire unjustly expelled Chagossians to Mauritius!

Whether it’s açaí berries or TLD’s neoliberalism always ends in the same way.
