Hoya carnosa rubra - Krimson Princess

First of many.

It’s just a plain old Hoya carnosa rubra ‘Krimson Princess’. Most wouldn’t give her a second glance, skipping over to find something more exotic. They’re a dime a dozen, you can find them anywhere. But it’s not the leaves or the blossoms, it’s the back story that make her special.

She was my first Hoya. She cost just a bit more that I usually spend on a plant. I didn’t know anything about Hoyas, but I had heard that they were difficult and finicky. I was sure that I was getting in over my head, sure I was going to kill it, sure I was doing something stupid.

Well, I was in a bit over my head, and I did do some stupid things. And even though I gave her several good reasons to die, she didn’t. I went to Hoyas school with this girl, and any other Hoya alive in my house owes her a debt of thanks. I do, as well.

So while she may not be the most exotic, trendy, and sought after Hoya, she’s really special to me.
