Ursula's Transformation Into Vanessa Evolution (1987 - 2023) | The Little Mermaid

this is the evolution of ursula's transformation into vanessa, from the 1987 workprint to the final 1989 movie. to the 2023 live action remake! the 2nd one is labeled "exact date unknown" because the original full file is listed as november 1987, but after watching it and seeing how much rough animation that is in there, i highly doubt it is from the same month as the first one. it is likely from somewhere in between early - mid 1988 based on how much rough animation was completed compared to later the little mermaid workprints.

The animated transformation remains unmatched. Ursula morphing into Vanessa is something I missed in live action... Pat Caroll's performance is a masterpiece 🙏🏻

The actual part where she morphs into Vanessa was added late in the making of the movie, the animators wanted to make it more clear early on that vanessa was Ursula

I like both for different reasons. I like the seriousness of the original ursula and the butterfly she kept for her spell. I like the new one where they don't show us what she's doing so for people who haven't seen the movie are in for a surprise. I also like how she's a bit more humorous. I just love both really. Just wish pat could have stayed long enough to see this.

I just realized, there's a visual hint missing in the 2023 version. Ursula didn't choose the name Vanessa at random. She used a Vanessa butterfly. By changing the ingredient to whatever that was, they kinda miss the hint.

I liked how they re-used a lot of the original lines from the original animated movie.

The Transformation in 1989 is better than the remake 🙂

Noticed a few things:

1. The tentacles almost have a mind of their own when she needs them to
2. Disney removed the bit where she called Ariel a Tramp cuz that’s considered something you probably shouldn’t say in a kids movie
3. In the Cartoon she violently searches for the potion ingredients and Disney expanded on that this time

Ursula's transformation is an instant plastic surgery.

Hey, when Ursula threw the butterfly in her cauldron, is that why her disguise’s name was Vanessa? There’s a butterfly species known as Vanessa so maybe she threw that exact species of butterfly into the cauldron and that’s why her name’s Vanessa. Just a theoryz

Ursula and Grimhilde both used disguises.

Grimhilde disguised herself as a creepy crone to give SnowWhite that poison apple.

Ursula disguised herself as a beautiful human woman named Vanessa to prevent Eric from kissing Ariel before the third sunset.

Can you do an evolution montage video of “You’re too late!” where Vanessa turns back to Ursula?

I always loved the little addition Pat did with the snort as she was transforming. It always made me laugh.

It seems like the live action is trying too hard to make the scene comedic when it doesn’t need to be. The original scene is already a little funny, but for the most part it takes the threat of Ursula seriously.

Also, side note, the remake scene is a perfect example of trying to do what the original movie did and your own thing at the same time. And it just doesn’t work. The lines copied from the original aren’t delivered with the same passion and intensity, and the new lines come off as awkward.

As a kid I always felt so bad for Ursula being such a fat woman, so I was happy when she got to transform and look more like Ariel!

odd question: is the 1989 Vanessa spell 3 ingredients or four? two bottles, the butterfly, and the necklace (i mean of course she isn't going to give Ariel the good spell that's more beautiful and can breathe underwater)

I like that they cut it from the 2023 version as her morphing is literally nightmare fuel

And it adds alot if mystery to what ursula is doing

For the young kids
