Here’s something you should know. One of the greatest things about doing farmers’ walks is you can massively decrease your chances of an injury, compared to a deadlift.

This study compared the biomechanical characteristics of farmers' walks, deadlifts, and unloaded walks in six experienced male strongman athletes performing at 70% of their 1RM deadlift.

The farmers' walk showed significant differences with greater trunk extension, thigh angle, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion at knees passing. It exhibited significantly greater mean vertical and anterior forces compared to the deadlift.

Overall, it suggests that the farmers' lift is a much safer and more effective alternative to the deadlift, generating more anterior-propulsive and vertical force with less stress on the lumbar spine due to a more vertical trunk position. So, you’re good to do this everyday and it will change your life! But what about the benefits?

I was in prison for two years and worked out almost every day and came out a beast. Got a job right after I got out setting mobile homes and modular homes which is very hard work and it killed me at first. I would much rather have practical strength than gym strength any day. Both together is best though

My father used to feed buckets of cracked wheat to 200hd of cattle every morning starting in mid fall. Increasing the amount of grain every day. By spring melt when it was muddy he was carrying 2 buckets in each hand with each trip becoming 16ft shorter from 120ft and sprint back to the barn for more. He gained 10lbs of muscle each winter and used this yearly conditioning to full advantage by putting in a mile of new fence posts each spring and had forearms bigger than his upper arm along with quads than would shame any body builder. Not bad for a 175lb man in his 60's. I'd burst with pride if I was half the man those old bastards were.

Just did my first dedicated 30 minutes of nonstop farmer's walks. Treadmill, solo arms, short intervals, it was incredible. Felt great, all the good parts got lactic acid, excited to do it again after 48-72 hours of recovery.

I started doing these 5 years ago when I turned 65, as an alternative to my previous weight training routine, which was resulting in 'old man injuries'. Prior to doing the FW, I was carrying two 5 gallon buckets of water 100 yards to water newly planted Norway Spruce trees and soon figured out I would not have to weight train on my watering days. I never knew the FW had a name!

I always follow heavy carries with pullups and hangs for time because the carries pack my spinal column.

No more backaches after replacing deadlifts with carries. Give it a shot!

I'm going to have to get heavier weights, but today while i watched this video I used what I have 2 - 25# Dumbells and I walked forward and backwards while watching this video. So you got me started.

With dumbbells outdoors uphill, back down the hill holding them at chest as if finishing curls, but now resting against body. This combo for 30 minutes with a one minute break between each segment is a decent workout in its own.

Walking lunges work great too with 30 to 40 lb. dumbells (or kettle). Been incorporating them into leg day and results are astounding.

I started doing farmer walks, but with one arm weighted and the other arm not and I love it. what this does it builds your core on the unweighted side because your core has to activate to help keep the weighted side from bending over and of course I switch arms, but this is a great exercise

Distance is king; I have done literally in the many thousands of loaded carries including farmer's walks. *This is saying that if I do 20 lbs x 2 for 2-3 football field length laps in the sand then go up to 60 lbs x 2 for 1 full lap, I get exponentially more results than had I done 300 lbs for 150 feet.*

The time under tension of moderate to modest weight for extreme distances is incredibly deeply fatiguing whereas a short distance with 300 lbs is just very hard and stressing on the joints and connective tissue in a way that is not beneficial, it's wear and tear.
*Huge weight for short bursts has it's benefits, but it's really not a lift where extreme weight is healthy or significantly rewarding.*

People doing them with massive weight are usually performing them for competitions. *It's also a lift where it is in fact OKAY to round your back or coordinate yourself into different positions to target muscles differently.* Because it's not being done with extreme weight when performed correctly, the range of what qualifies as "bad form" is 10x smaller than if doing extreme weight.
