I believe there is historical evidence of men breast feeding in Roman times, with the rate of women who died in child birth, being able to keep the species from going extinct by means of men adapted to breastfeeding the young in such situations sounds like a very good evolutionary trait to me.

Humans are built to a common pattern by default. Both men and women have the genetic characteristics to be either male or female but for most people only one alternative develops. Not only men have nipples but they have underdeveloped (pre-pubescent) breasts.

Nipples grow before the gender of an embryo is determined. After a fetus gets nipples, if there is the Y chromosome and more amount of the hormone testosterone, the fetus becomes male, if not female. A male and female child's breasts have pretty much the same pattern. It's the estrogen hormone that exists in females more than it does in men that make girls develop breasts in a different way when they enter adolescent.

Why do men have nipples? In one sentence because fetuses get nipples before their gender is determined.
