Quick encouragement for anyone trying to learn drumming for the first time - especially adults: I know this seems simplistic, but believe me when I say that this is the way to start. Almost no one sits down and "just plays." We all struggled through simple beats and limb independence and maintaining a consistent tempo. It takes work, and it starts with incredibly monotonous repetition. You aren't bad at it; it's just new. It takes effort and time for everyone. Don't feel like you should just somehow magically be able to do more or progress faster. There is no drum hack that everyone else knows that you are missing out on. It's just the discipline to practice and the humility to be okay with starting small.

This video is really a good starting point. I had zero musical talent, and no concept of playing the drums when I got my first kit as a teenager. All I knew was that you hit stuff with sticks.

Within the first hour, it's easy to start getting down the basic rock/pop beat that is used just about everywhere in music for many decades.

Generally everything else is as simple as learning a new pattern until it feels natural, and slowly those patterns build into the freedom to create and invent what you hear in your head.

And if you're just playing alone with your favorite songs, there's usually at least a simplified beat beginners will quickly learn to identify, and play along at their own pace as they grow.

I hope this video gets just one person to pick up the drums, or give them a try. It's fun, it can be a different way to exercise, and there is no shortage of musicians of all levels looking for drummers.

I have always wanted to play drums but could not get a kit and time to practice. when I always listen to music I focus on the drum patterns and the energy that drums give to the music. if I see live pieces of music videos I focus on the drummer how he is playing the beats and the hand techniques he is applying on those small gaps that the camera shows the drummer playing. i disturb my colleagues at work trying to figure out the pattern of the music by heating the tables. I love drumming but due to many life reasons I can't experience it learning and playing but I will try in the future. thank you drumeo for the videos showing the drummers playing and also for sharing their inspirational talks. from Ethiopia
