It's like the best parts of a standard buckler and a targe in one. Nicely done.

Coming in very late, but that leatherwrapping trick is genius. I'm pretty much entirely self-taught (and not very well) when it comes to that sort of thing, and never thought of anything like that. Definitely leveled up my leatherworking this time around!

Soon as I saw it I thought "Skyrim, Target of the Blooded, " my all-time favorite shield to use in the game. And because bashing an opponent with your shield helps level up the "blocking" skill AND because TotB does extra damage plus "damage over time, " half the time I don't even bother using the actual weapon I have equipped in my other hand. Just go bash faces in. Very satisfying in its own way.

I've been looking to make one of these, I like this video a lot easy to follow and the production is great, I wasn't thinking about adding a metal ring around the outside but now I am 😏

Great looking buckler! Just some really small points, 1) maybe pad/cover the center bolt to protect your fingers! 2) you could cover the gap in the rim by using short strips of the steel you used at 90° to the rim (four spaced around the rim will help hold it in place) 3) perhaps use nails to hold the rim in place to be more historically accurate! I say this as a guy who uses a buckler regularly in reenactment here in the UK. Anyway, a great video really well done!!

How about a LARP safe Spiked Pavise shield. Basically a larger strapped shield that also has a spike for attacking, but in a different place.

cool! i dont think ive ever see a all wooden buckler before! it turned out quite lovley :-) and built like a tank! you could (structually) parry claymores with that! if you ever going to do another shield... ikeas "blanda blank" could be repurpused as a boss. also cold forge one is quite simple. i could make a short vid how to do similar things for you if you would like. only a ball peen hammer and a block of wood needed :-)

First video I've seen of yours and have to say you present well. Also some good carpentry/crafting tips as well. The buckler looks great and has an intimation about it. A good piece for cosmetic or a fantasy armory.

However: please don't try to use this design in a combat or sport. Your wrists will hate you. In trying this, it reinforced that there is a reason for the boss. It allows your hand to be at the center of mass, and not feel the impact from the other side of the shield as much. The handle did a little bit not as much as a boss. Bucklers are typically used more as a guard for a sword that doesn't have a complex guard/hilt (say a side, back, or maybe even an arming sword). This would be harder to shield your other wrist with this buckler as it has an additional hight from the handle. Also, don't use your shield as a weapon... Keep it in front of you, the first objective of any credible martial art is to survive yourself, second is harm the other if necessary.

With this aside, I made a HEMA friendly version of this to put it to the test. The spike was made of rubber, but it was still an easy leverage point for the other person, and once they found out which way the handle sat, they could thrust to the perpendicular side and wrench my wrists, swiveling my buckler. It has a little use if I went to punch, but punching meant that I was likely to get hit. This led to many double kills (where both were hit) or me just getting hit as reach isn't your friend when they have a 20 or so inch advantage with a backsword.

This was tested in a HEMA sparring match, a typically even matched opponent, backsword and buckler where my buckler was swapped out with a similar designed buckler. From 20 bouts, I was hit 14 times, mostly in the shoulder. I hit them 8 times. Four was with the sword, two was accidentally getting him in the wrist with the rubberized spike (one was a double), two were binds that I did end up using the spike by punching, but in one I was hit as well.
I had major issues with controlling my buckler once anything came in contact with the spike or the edge, perpendicular to the way the handle is. He slipped between my sword and buckler twice when trying to avoid my hand from being sniped.

All in all, looks good, it would last a long time with a metal band around it (keeps the wood from splitting and possibly prevents some warping), and it would frighten knavish opponent into running away.

Looking forward to more of your videos, found this whole trying to get tips on different shields I can make for HEMA, and the best way to make them. If there is any ideas you want tested let us know lol. It's kinda a second purpose to HEMA, to find out how people used to fight, why they did, and why they didn't do somethings we came up with in modern fantasy genres.
HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts.

If you have read this far, thank you for reading my long winded comment.

Learning to solve a rubic's cube is one of my favorite skills I've aquired, not sure it could ever make a good video though. If you're just casually learning, you could learn it in 4-5 days, if you're really focused, you can knock it out in a day, 2 at most.

Love the vid, love the channel, love the idea. Very happy to be one if the first subs.
Some video ideas that I think would be quick and easy, incase you want to stock pile some.
5 essential knots
Card
Flair bartending tricks
Diy flair bartending bottles
Money origami (I love to tip with origami. You get to show off a unique skill, make yourself memorable for future visits, brighten the day of the worker. It's never a bad thing.)
Whittling (maybe eating utensils to start with) there's tons more, but I'll stop there for now. hope it's helpful
