IS THE 3 WOOD DEAD? // Getting the Right Gapping with 5 Wood, 3 Wood or Mini Driver

Today, Ian is in the bay to test out if a 3 Wood still has a place in the modern golf bag. For some it will always, but with technology changing quickly and only 14 clubs allowed. It does raise the question if the 3 Wood has more or less value than a 5 wood?

Just removed the driver out of the bag, for I love how consistent the Mini driver is, and replaced my 3 wood and now have just the mini and a 7 wood! I can carry the 7 wood 240 off the ground and 260-280 is my mini driver off a tee! Do not see why I need to change or add another club that I don't feel confident enough in!

I don't understand the concept of calling a 10.5* lofted mini driver a 3 wood replacement. 10.5 is driver loft, regardless of what size head it is or if you're hitting it off the deck. And delofting a 5 wood to 16.5 * means it's a 4 wood, so it's not 5 wood loft anymore. I do agree that most amateurs don't need a 3 wood. They'd be better off with a 4 or 5 wood, 7 wood combo and let's face it most of us do not play from 7K plus yards on a course.

Actually my 3 wood is my favorite club in the bag. One of the most consistent for me off the tee and second shot in like par 5’s. Golf will and always will be subjective.

3 wood is very versatile. Great control club off the tee and if you have a forgiving model like Sim 2 max it’s fine from the fairway too.

I bought a 4W recently. 16.5 degree. Love it

Here's another interesting setup my friend is doing.... 7W and a 4W... gives him a really perfect gap between the driver and his highest iron.

Love my 4w\7w into 4 iron setup…fills gaps nicely for long approach shots, gives me defined club selection off of the tee

I’m mixing it up this year. Used to go driver, 3 wood and 3 hybrid. But took out 3 wood and replaced it with a Chucky 2 iron for a back up off the tee. Doesn’t go quite as far as 3 wood but consistency is significantly better. Also has a lower ball flight, and even though off the deck goes a similar distance to hybrid, playing a sw Scotland links course the lower and highly ball flight option is a nice tool to have.

If you’re only looking for a club off the tee try Golf Pride +4 grips. They allow me to grip down on all my clubs without changing the feel. If I need a shorter, flighted tee shot I grip down 1”-1.5” on the driver and tee it a little lower.

Still rocking the RBZ Tour 3 wood at 14.5 and it’s staying til it breaks. A rocket off the tee but versatile enough where I don’t struggle off the deck. She’s “the one” 😂

Welcome to the club Ian. Since the last BRNR came out I have gone down the route of driver (8°), mini (13.5), 5 wood (18), 4 utility iron then into my irons. Feel like it gives me all the options. Tee clubs, forgiveness and most yardages covered.

I used to carry a Dr, 3W and 3Hy. But never really felt comfortable with 3W off the deck. I changed to a 4W and that little extra loft really helped me feel confident over the ball

I'm absolutely loving my new Cleveland 3+ 17 degree Hy-wood! With the shorter stock shaft this thing is very easy to hit.

I’m still rocking a standard stealth 3 wood and 5 wood. Carry the 3 wood 265. Just put an Ai Smoke triple diamond 9° in my bag and hit a 330 yarder on the course with it. But I did just pick up a lightly used 2023 model BRNR 13.5 that I plan to replace my 3 wood with. lol

Just put in a mini driver with Ventus shaft and returned my 3 wood. Works great with my full driver and 5 wood set up. TM truck built it on the spot for me at my CC fitting.

I’m all hybrids 5-2 atm. The king tecs with the stock mmt shaft fit me great and match my irons in feel so I’m not bouncing around different swing weights or flex stiffness from one shot to the next.

I go Driver, Franken 4 wood, 7wood, 24* hybrid. I love the top of my bag now.

3w is a staple in my bag. Currently playing a cobra Rad speed. 15.5 it does everything. Fairway finder, easy off the deck. Fade or draw. If i replace it, it will be with another 3w

i´ve had the td 300 mini on the bag for 3 years now, , , , is low spin, , great great off the tee, and a low bullet on the fairway.., but very straight which works great on my tight windy course....i´ve always had problems hitting the driver aginst the wind, , , teeing it lower meant spinnyy short me works is a bit shorter than my and i´m getting fitted next week for the 5w, in order to get a hight¡r flight on the fairway, , , to replace my 3w, , , , i´ve been meaning to do it for a while and this is the final push... thank you!!

I go driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 5 iron. For me and my swing speed the gaping is perfect. My confidence in those clubs is very high, so I haven’t played with a 3 wood in over a decade.
