A 6-year-old went into cardiac arrest after a ball slammed into his chest at his little league game. Just like football star Damar Hamlin, Oscar Stuebe suffered commotio cordis and instantly collapsed. His mom, Sarah, ran out to begin CPR. After an agonizing four minutes, the ambulance arrived. Paramedics used a defibrillator, also known as an AED, to get Oscar’s heart to start beating again. Sarah says that is what saved her son's life. Inside Edition’s Ann Mercogliano has more.

I'll bet she never thought she'd be putting her skills to practice on her own child

The fact the AED is not at all little league games, or even any sport is INSANE considering the amount of these deaths that have happened the past 15 years.

I think chest pads should be the new rule in baseball.

Medical doctor here. "Commotio cordis" refers to a phenomenon where blunt trauma to the heart precipitates ventricular fibrillation ("vfib"). The heart is a muscular pump and to function effectively all parts must contract and relax in a certain rhythm. This rhythm is maintained by a pattern of electrical pulses, which you see in an ECG. In vfib, this electrical pattern becomes disorganized and the different parts of the heart no longer contract and relax together. This means the heart no longer functions as a pump. If you observe a heart in vfib, the classical description is that it looks like a "bag of worms".

Ive been a softball catcher for 9 years and have only worn my gear chest plate. Then the catcher on the other team blocked a ball and collapsed, it hit hard enough at the exact time her heart beat to make it quit. My step dad (who’s a registered nurse) saved her and since then I’ve had an undershirt chest protector. It’s such a dangerous sport that is normalized in our society, and yet I can’t stop playing.

Yes, chest pads and AED should both be required. They could save many lives. 😊❤ Glad this lil boy is okay.

Guys, this is NOT a heart attack but cardio fibrillation due to a strong and direct impact on the chest in the heart area.

That boy's lucky to have her as a mother. Hopefully other parents and/or guardians will take note of this.

Very proud of mom and dad for allowing the boy back out there to have fun. Things like this don’t happen often but when it did im surprised they didn’t take him off the field. Glad to see the pads coming out more.

That probably freaked all of those kids out.

I’m an umpire for a little league and this is my greatest fear of my job. Luckily this season there is an AED at every field in case of something like this happening.

I so glad the boy is okay. I hope the batter is alright after this too. I would be so scared if I hit that ball and accidentally almost killed someone.
