It´s a legitimate method for some situations, however too many procedures for me and somehow dated. Auto-punch is not so effective for live piano since the sustains on the seams are never matching up. Perhaps it´s effective for vocals. I prefer to simply have 2 or 3 audio tracks for the same instrument, and just cut out what is bad, set locators to the desired amount, just play along on the empty audio track below, record the new part in the space and later bounce it all to a stem or in place. The result is much more natural and the player has plenty of time to set since locators can bet set 4 bars ahead. For MIDI: delete the notes, set locators and play over the empty section. Just my opinion, no ill feelings!
