To group information first go through the info on surface level and connect all the big points/concepts/keywords then go a little deeper and connect the deeper concepts as well.

Non linear note taking is beneficial for this for eg-mind map.

What's Also important to mention is that you should think of higher order learning as a process not an outcome. So then u sit down don't focus on what you'll have to remember and how much you can remember by doing this but focus on your thoughts while u study instead: how is this related to anything? What's the importance of this? Etc.
