I carry a sweater as well on airplanes even when you are given a blanket I am thin and get cold. I agree with the comment about a zippered bag as having had turbulence the bag’s contents would have been flying everywhere.
I have had a leather craftsman put a zipper in one of my favorite tote bags and that has worked well
