My dad planned on retiring in his 60s but died at 51. That made it very clear that this plan is terrible.

I retired at 57 and I am 66 now. 9 years fully retired. I could have retired at 54 if I wanted to. Paid off house, car, money in the bank. I have taken vacations to Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Caribbean cruise. Yeah. Right. Huge mistake. I live in Canada.

Most Americans face the prospect of delaying their retirement beyond age 65 simply because they don't have the financial wherewithal to retire earlier. By the time they face the reality of becoming a senior citizen, they have long since relinquished their chance at a financially sound retirement.

And there is nothing you can do to make them wake up. They live in a dream world where "there is always tomorrow" to save for retirement, not realizing that tomorrow can never make up for what was lost today. What's so ironic is that when they finally wake up, their first question is, "where did all the time go?"
