My mum still has her caftans from the 70’s, and she has a very special one gifted to her in 1980 from the Tiwi Islands when my father was building on a Bathurst Island, with traditional screen printed designs by Tiwi artists (from the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin in the Northern Territory). I’m now very interested in pulling them out with her! Thanks for the inspo❤. Also, I’ve just made my third Reynolds dress from Helen’s Closet, and looking at sewing the same top you’re wearing in this video. Or maybe the Gilbert. Or both😂. Because, I’ve just got some denim to make the Lennox Skirt by Style Arc.

This a great reference source for kaftan patterns. As we head into summer again I am rewatching it.

I loved playing dress ups in my mums caftans, they were gorgeous.
Currently cutting out two Megan Nielsen Matilda dresses, one in double gauze and the other in linen. This week I made two Megan Nielson Darling Ranges dresses and two Brumby skirts. It’s been a busy week! The Matilda’s are for me, the others for my very lucky daughter. 🎉 thanks for the interesting video Kristen- happy sewing 🎉

I love this video! I don't gravitate toward caftans, but I loved learning the history and seeing different options. Thank you!

Loved watching this Kristen, so well done. I know they take time to pull together and only a few mins to watch but they are gems. Anytime 😊

I love a long and floaty easy wear kaftan around the house in summer! Some of those patterns are just gorgeous ❤

I made the Vogue pattern to wear to my son's pre-wedding dinner in a knee length. So enjoyed making this and felt great on the night. When I made this dress it required a zipper in the back, so I put in my first zipper in 30 years.

I have one of my mom’s caftans from the 70’s in black and gold. I am knitting this week but very inspired to sew soon!

Hi Kristen, interesting history of Caftans and how they have changed over the years. I've got the Charlie Caftan on my sewing table as my next project. I have been making Papercut Patterns Sequence Blouse and dress for my work wardrobe. I'm in love with this pattern and how simple it is to make. I've made one blouse in Cotton Voile for a soft look, another in African Wax print for a bold and vibrant look and a dress in a heavy linen viscose. I'm going to make one more dress style for a beach cover up and one last blouse in a silk blend for weekend wear before I move onto The Charlie Caftan in both styles.

37 degrees!! Wow I'd melt!! I think it's too hot in the mid 20s lol interesting timing. I actually bought a few kaftan patterns the other week. Material is very expensive here so I'm reluctant to make the beautiful big floaty ones. I prefer the round necklines only cos I'm so small everything would pop out of V necks lol

Thankyou for a great video my favourite is the Charlie Caftan I’m making another. Also I won the Folkware patterns from you and choose the Turkish dancer set very caftan like So looking forward to making that too. Stay cool 37 is way too hot for me. 😅

OMG SIMPLICITY 8505. I owned and used that pattern back in the day. Lovely and flowing but snugged up under the bust in the second incarnation. Gorgeous.

Very interesting video. I am 70, I recently started wearing caftan style dresses that I adore wearing. I feel so feminine, floaty and quite lovely in them. Thank you for sharing.

So interesting to hear about the history of a garment style! I have the Charlie pattern but not made it up yet, will refer back to this video for other ideas if I like the caftan style on me 😀

I have Simplicity 8657 and I like it. I made one in a light denim but I'm planning on another in a more floaty fabric once I find one that speaks to me. It's a real easy make as well since it was one of my first patterns when I started sewing.

Such an interesting look at caftans. Great patterns. I haven’t made any for myself but it reminded me of when I was in my early 20’s an elderly neighbour asked me if I could make her some, copying some worn out purchased ones from the 70’s. I hadn’t seen anything like it before and thought they were so chic and interesting, a little too glamorous for staying at home in but she explained that with mobility issues they were easy to get into and comfortably cool

I’m planning to make a caftan style dress to wear to my upcoming getaway to Palm Springs, California, so this video is perfect timing! I think I’ll make one of the big 4 styles, probably Vogue 1735 or vintage Vogue 1886, as I have rose in my pattern collection. I have some lovely silks, linens and viscose to use. I envision wearing my make with big jewelry, flat sandals and a fun straw handbag. Thanks for another great video, complete with some fashion history!
