As someone who is studying under a Dzogchen teacher, and Dzogchen is one of those "effortless" practices:
It takes a great deal of discipline to be truly effortless, and there is hours and hours of active meditation practice to do - very similar to more well known Zazen meditation of Zen Buddhism. To let go and let be requires practice because the truly free, effortless state of mind is not how an average person thinks and operates. More typically people are obsessed with their own though patterns.

This is exactly how Michael Puett, a scholar on Chinese philosophy, also phrases it. It's the almost automatic level of mastery you achieve when doing a practise. You don't think about the act anymore or have to bring willpower into it. It just comes without effort.

I have no idea if this is right or not, but one way that I view Wu Wei, is to do what feels right, and not do what feels wrong. Sometimes doing what feels right is making money with a day job, sometimes its starting a strict and disciplined practice. But you only do those things if they seem like what you should be doing, and you abandon them if you feel a "spiritual" resistance to it.

This is a good conversation! But I’ve been thinking about the idea of “Be Here Now” as the ultimate practice instruction. Like Liber Juggoram focus training. It’s become my mantra to bring me back to focus when my mind is insistent on being lazy.

I’ve practiced it for years, better way to say it is, not getting in the way. I don’t pay people for the gold you can find if you just go dig in your own yard. But nothing gold can stay.

Method without purpose.
Whereas Western magicians bang their head against the proverbial 'magic circle', tao and bagua offer a consistent, testable, and repeatable methodology which realizes the highly variable chains of causation which result in universal liberation and continuous improvements and advancements of sentient beings without succumbing to Neitzschean God complexes or Crowlean mistranslations of Greek [ thelema means divine will, or the path to human perfection, not spreading diseases in brothels and society itself... ], but through entry into the dynamism of the tao and validation and verification of successful results through pakua or other systems of divinatory confirmation.
